I also agree with what royale said, the winners of the past 8 world series all had the hard nose. gritty, fast pain in the ass on their respective teams, for instance juan pierre, david eckstein, dustin pedroia, joe crede etc. its more about the chemistry of the team than the payroll.....the biggest statement against your argument is the basis of your argument: the fact that none of the highest payroll teams have won this decade besides the yankees in 2000 and I dont think their payroll was that outrageous that year.

That is a great response to the argument NYC, and in all actuality I can make no rebuttal towards it, due to the fact that your right, none of the Highest paid teams have won this decade - with the maybe the exclusion of the 04/07 Red Sox. I'm not sure of their respective payrolls those years, but I believe they were usually around 2nd in the mid-decade. You are also correct in that Chemistry is key to any team. If there are problems in the club house from egotistical superstars, it carries out onto the field. But chemistry aside, the big market teams will always have the distinct advantage to field their teams with 5 tool players and super stars over the off season and be heavily favored come March.

Philadelphia is the fourth largest media market in the country (and the largest unshared one). The Phillies have the seventh highest payroll in the majors. They may not be the Yankees, but they're hardly put-upon underdogs.

Also, let's not get carried away here, everyone. All four of the LCS teams are in the top ten in payroll.

I absolutely agree with this......its really an argument that will go on forever. For instance there is already talk here in ny about mauer and lackey being free agents in the next year or two.....even being a yankee fan it drives me nuts, we dont need every GD all star, id rather have a nice mixture of youth and experience while maintaining a nice farm system for a future.

It is always nice to field a nice farm team, Its how the indians became so successful in the mid 90 developing Ramirez and Thome, and more recently, C.C., Cliff Lee, Victor Martinez, and Grady Seizemore...And it makes for a special association with players seeing them come up through the Minors. I personally got to watch C.C and Martinez play for the Indians low A ball teams every summer and it was great once they got to the Majors........ but hey you do have a great farm system its called the 29 other MLB rosters..

Minnesota is Boston's farm team in pretty much every sport.

but youre only using this year as an example, take the lcs teams in this decade and youll be shocked at your findings.....you have arizona, florida, tampa bay, the angels who were 15th in payroll, 2005 white sox who were 14th in payroll etc.

                        From a unknown newspaper:
"The success of the Yankees doesn't prove anything except that the man with the most money can own the fastest car."

This was written in 1928. 1928.

besides salary, they pay their players under the table

                          the umps too......

what a bunch of losers........they even offered Manny more money than the dodgers, but he said he had no desire to play with such a selfish team.

Geez, you all discounting the Phils already? Even before either the Phils or the Yanks close out their series? Teams have come back from a 3-1 deficit, you know (I'm sure nyc's fully aware). As for the Phils being small market team? Balony - that canard went away once Citizen's Bank Ballpark opened. The only reason they were even considered small is that the group of owners were acting like a bunch of misers while in the Vet. They finally learned that you have to spend money to make money. And as far as the Yankees "buying championships"? That's bull - many MLB fans would love to have an ownership dedicated to putting out a quality product every year. They spend, sure, but what else are they supposed to do? Fritter away their franchise like the Royals or Pirates? And spending doesn't always equal championships (see the Mets, meet the Mets, come on out and greet the Mets...).

Whats the deal with Mo throwing spit balls? Some crazy LA news people are making a big deal out of nothing. This is from Game 3, the one the Angels won...

And looked what happened to all of them. They either jacked up their payroll to remain competitive or fell apart after they couldn't afford to keep their good players. I'm not saying it's impossible for small-market teams to be competitive. But it is close to impossible for them to be consistent contenders year after year. Pretty much the only way a small-market team can hope to compete is to play its cards exactly right and stockpile young talent that will hopefully develop into a competitive team. And then they let those players go when they can no longer afford to keep them and the cycle begins anew. Look, I'm not taking anything away from the Yankees. They're a well-run organization that does a lot of things right. But you can't deny that for big-market teams, the margin of error is a lot larger and the window of opportunity remains open a lot longer.
