And as far as the Yankees "buying championships"? That's bull - many MLB fans would love to have an ownership dedicated to putting out a quality product every year. They spend, sure, but what else are they supposed to do? Fritter away their franchise like the Royals or Pirates? And looked what happened to all of them. They either jacked up their payroll to remain competitive or fell apart after they couldn't afford to keep their good players. I'm not saying it's impossible for small-market teams to be competitive. But it is close to impossible for them to be consistent contenders year after year. Pretty much the only way a small-market team can hope to compete is to play its cards exactly right and stockpile young talent that will hopefully develop into a competitive team. And then they let those players go when they can no longer afford to keep them and the cycle begins anew. Look, I'm not taking anything away from the Yankees. They're a well-run organization that does a lot of things right. But you can't deny that for big-market teams, the margin of error is a lot larger and the window of opportunity remains open a lot longer.

so is it best for noone to spend money??? of course the "big market" teams hold an advantage...hence the "big market" !every sports athletes dream is to play in a big market cause with that comes nike deals and other huge endorsements, and big market teams have an advantage because they have a bigger fan base which means more ticket and merchandise sales which increases revenue, it allows them to have their own cable networks which makes them a billion dollars a year, thats the way it goes.....MLB made every attempt to cure that by charging a penalty to big market teams and give it to small market teams and a team like milwaukee pockets the cash.....based on the theory that "its not fair" we should just have every game end in a tie and every player make the exact same amount of money and see what happens to the interest in the game

haha this debate will go on forever... there is no way to solve it. A salary cap will never be impossed. The players association will never let it happen, and if MLB does try it we'll have another 1994 on our hands...

No, I propose the exact opposite. Keep the revenue sharing system, but MAKE THEM SPEND THE MONEY. It makes no sense to allow teams to make a profit while making no effort to field a competitive team.

As for interest in the game, the NFL, which has a ridiculous amount of structures in place to ensure competitive balance, is the most profitable sports league in the world. I don't think that's a coincidence.

That point is debatable (and experiences in other sports would seem to indicate otherwise). But what this conversation really does for me is highlight what a fundamentally stupid and irrational thing sports fandom is.
