I do not see getting a strip view or a higher floor an "upgrade" and more times than not I bet you could just get that type of room just be being nice and asking.

Getting a bigger room or a better is suite is an upgrade and I would then tip $20 for it.

I asked for a upgrade at the MGM once and they offered a terrace suite for $180 on a Friday night ($90 more than I paid), which is normally $900+.

      3rd party site

Any issues trying to upgrade after pre-paying in full with a 3rd party website like vegas.com?

there should not be an issue if they have upgrade rooms available. In some cases I've booked through a company that owns a number of suites in a hotel and I wasnt able to upgrade because of that. But I dont think Vegas.com owns the rooms/suites they book so you should be okay. In my experience the $20 tip works when I check in before 10AM, during a weekday..unless the hotel you're staying at has a lot of available rooms during a weekend. It never hurts to try it, most of the time the employee checking you in will hand you the $20 back if they cant accommodate you.

I always try the sandwich trick no matter what...what do I have to lose? Usually when they can't, I get my $20, $40 or $50 back...and I'm sure to look for someone of the opposite sex at the desk as I haven't tried it with a dude yet. Worked at Luxor, Caesar's, and Ballys.

And yes, ya gotta be sure you know what your upgrade options are, do a lil research on the room types prior to check in. I'd hate to have reserved 2 queens only get an upgrade to 1 King.

I've negotiated other stuff in my upgrade too, free gym passes and a fridge at no additional cost.

          We're in Vegas...so its a gamble!

+1 exactly! I had my resort fees waived. So $20 tip for $100 I would've paid in fees. Good by me

Has anyone heard of success with this trick at Cosmo? I didn't see it listed on the sites that were linked so couldn't check reviews for it.

I just got back from LV. Basically a newbie trip since the last time I had been there was '97. Stayed at the Venetian. Did the $20 sandwich and made nice small talk with the desk agent. She was nice and things proceeded. But I didn't end up with any room upgrade. I got the same room I booked - a standard suite. I ended up on the 25th floor with what I would call a "semi" strip view. I was on the side where I looked across to the Mirage & TI. Not one looking down the strip.

I had read reports of people ending up in Venezia or Palazzo towers for $20, but not in my case.

I suppose I could have ended up on a single digit # floor - but all in all wasn't what I expected, and don't think it was really worth it. But maybe I did it wrong...

Did you ask for an upgrade?

I'm staying there in a couple of weeks and plan on specifically asking for a Bella or Rialto upgrade.

worked for me in Feb (upgraded to wraparound terrace suite) and kinda worked last week. not as nice of an upgrade but they gave me a fair price to upgrade to a terrace suite.

It's going to depend on their room availability and how early you go.

That's what I love about Cosmo, no resort fees and free wifi.

Offered $20 for an upgrade (knew $50 would be too much as we still needed 2 beds and weren't about to throw $200 on an upgrade to a Sky Suite). A very nice clerk hands the $20 and says to hold onto it until we're done, then I can decide whether she gets it.

Asking for High Floor, Strip View... says the highest they can do is 25th floor Strip View. Then...

Checks with Manager... says they can do 37th floor Strip View.

Checks again with Manager... new rooms just came on the board and they can move us up to the 52nd (of 54) floor, Strip View.

I gladly hand over the $20.

This is exactly what I am afraid of http://www.vegastripping.com/news/news.php?news_id=3571
I don't see getting a higher floor to be anything of a bonus at all. I don't see saving three hundred feet from an elevator I had to walk a mile to get to, an upgrade. Specifically, I want to know if I can have a bigger room. I don't care if it's facing air conditioner vents or a wall compared to having a walkin shower for five or another bathroom.

Anyway, does anyone work in hospitality and do you know if there is a better time of day to check in than others?
That being said, if you're asking if it can be done, you're probably not at the level where you could pull it off.

You want to be at the club where girls want to be... not where guys get good bottle deals.

Las Vegas was good. Hell of a ship, hell of a crew.
