so i've read a couple threads now about ppl having their safe broken into. is room security a problem at the cosmo? i would think it would be pretty easy to see if an unauthorized person were entering a room. dont u just roll back the tape? in any case both threads mentioned that their money was stolen out of the safe which adds an extra level of uneasiness. are there others that have had similar experiences? i wouldnt want to stay there if my room and safe could be so easily compromised.

I have a client that sells security systems to casinos...I'm inquiring about this myself. I've always used the in-room safe for my cash. I've never had a problem, but it makes me wonder how secure they really are and if there are other options for storing cash. Our past couple trips we've taken less cash and just hit the ATM everyday and pay the $8.00 fee or whatever.

After talking with my client I will never use an in-room safe for cash ever again anywhere I go. They're essentially useless as far as protecting your valuables from employees. He couldn't go in to detail as to why exactly, but if he doesn't trust them, then neither do I.
He said your best bet is to ask the concierge to lock up any valuables for you. They have to keep a log and there are witnesses and usually video of all of this happening. Not every hotel will offer such a service, but if you have a few grand in cash, or some truly valuable jewelry it's worth looking into.

thanks for the info chuck. thats pretty scary stuff for any hotel but esp in vegas. even still i would think it would be pretty easy to see if an unauthorized person were in your room since cmaeras are in all the hallways. im not sure why it isnt easy to catch these guys. the only person that might have a reason to be in your room unattended would be housekeeping.

In the two cases Ive read on here employees were invited in to the room due to a malfunctioning safe. Ive never had a problem anywhere myself, but better safe than sorry.

Also, it's been confined to the one resort that we know of. I am really hoping this is just one bad group of people, but everyone is right in that you should be better safe than sorry

Youre putting money where they expect it to be. Just put it somewhere else they dont and its probably a better chance of being safe. Not gonna say where to hide it but I put mine in other places.

I usually hide most throughout my personal belongings, but I have always done this because of housekeeping. I have not really worried about security too much. That ATM fee is like a small insurance policy.

Last few trips I have kept them very safe by storing them in table drop boxes and inside slot machines

On a recent trip (not to Vegas) I couldn't open the hotel safe using the code I picked to lock it (I'm pretty sure I had the code right). The front desk sent someone up who arrived in 10min and opened the safe in less then a minute. I assume there's an override code for this purpose.

It seems there should be a record of who uses a card to enter the room, so in order to make stealing from these safes work, it would take either someone who has a reason to be in your room (housekeeping) and also knows how to open the safe (it wasn't clear if it was just a code or a device required to override) or have someone who can open the safe enter the room while the door is open (housekeeping is working). It seems like there would be a pattern, but only if the hotel is interested in pursuing it.

The issue with this is that would make them accept more responsiblity with any tracking system. As of now they can just write each person off as an singular incident if you were to track them I would imagine they would find a much larger problem and end up with a class action lawsuit.

In other news, this is why I bring luggage locks.. inside of luggage locks.. and then odd hiding places.
