Stayed at Elara this past week. Only 1 night booked there. It was Tuesday. I booked the deal on the Hilton website that was "book a studio, get a free upgrade to the junior suite".

When I arrived, a very pretty dark haired female helped me (maybe about 25yrs old). I forgot her name. I gave her my ID, credit card and Hilton card. I asked "do you have any complimentary upgrades available to maybe the 2 bedroom suite?" This is actually 2 steps above my scheduled room. She told me "no, I am not allowed to upgrade to that room, but I can get you a 1 bedroom suite". I told her that would be great, especially if its on a high floor. She said, "I have you on floor 54". I think the top floor is 56. By the way, we had a very nice view too. You could partially see the Bellagio fountains. Had room 5405.
Well i think this went really well, especially, remember, I only actually paid for a studio (the lowest room). I never had to bring out tip money, just asked for it.

I think this is how the rooms are set up now at Elara:

      Studio
      Junior Suite
      1-BEDROOM SUITE
      2-BEDROOM SUITE
      2-BEDROOM SUITE PREMIER
      3-BEDROOM SUITE
      3-BEDROOM SUITE PREMIER
      4-BEDROOM SUITE

I've always wanted to try the $20 trick but I always chicken out, not because I can't do it, but because I dont want to let go of my $20. haha.

I've always just used my charm though. lol and it seems to work pretty good. Last time I checked at PH Towers, beginning of Dec, I asked for an upgrade from the girl that was checking me in and I went from a studio to a 1br with no tip at all. She said, I just want you to enjoy your stay at a better room. haha.

It was a super low floor but who cares. It was upgraded to a 1br so I was good with that.
