Wow. You all managed to say somewhat on topic. Could it be that small cute animals are threadjacker kryptonite?

Anyway, I'm going to be moving into an apartment or a basement room in someone's home. Plus, I'm on campus a lot for school. So my time and space are somewhat limited. I don't know how viable it'd be for me to care for something high-maintenance like a large dog. That's kind of why I'm gravitating toward a cat. But I'm open to whatever. I had been thinking about getting a ferret, but they're apparently illegal in DC. I'll just see what happens when I go to the shelter.

Even tho I HATE cats. I would go with a cat in your situation. Dogs need a lot of exercise and if ur place and time are limited they might not get that. Cats are very independent and will be able to do their own thing..and no worries about having to take them outside.. just clean the litter box.

I tend to agree in your situation. If your not going to be home as much cats are better. Dogs need love and attention constantly and if you cant be there for them a good amount then its just not fair to the dog.

Um... well I have a small dog but to be honest with you it wasnt really my choice. I let my daughter choose and she chose a fucking chipoodle mutt. I wont lie the dog is pretty ugly but people love him and since she chose him I cant really get rid of him to get a bigger dog like I'd like. So for now I'm stuck with an ugly yet cute little dog. I'll post up a pic in a bit.

go with the cat...the dogs are way to much work and you have to find a sitter when you go to vegas
