  • Tipping Front Desk for Room Upgrade?

    http://www.frontdesktip.com/las-vegas/mirage/

^^ I found this link while I was looking to upgrade my room for my bachelorette in 2 weeks (WOOO), and I came across this! Has anyone had any experience with this? I am thinking of trying it and see what my chances are.

There seems to be a whole community built around this tactic.

I didn't think that the hotel front desk gave a shit about what you're doing/where your there, another girl going to Vegas for her Bachelorette isn't something terribly new, haha. They see "people" like you everyday, so unless your giving money, you're just a another number in the line?

I'm going to call in today and see what they have to offer prior to my front desk trick, if they don't offer me something groovy over the phone.

Just called Mirage and they advised me I would definitely want to speak with them once I get to the Front Desk. They wouldn't know their inventory until the day of arrival, and then if available, they could offer me a suite. So I will wait til then!

Definetly try this trick. Before you try this trick do a little bit of research of the hotel and see what is it that you want to ask for. You have a better chance at getting something when you know what u want/ask for. It doesn't hurt to try this trick. And if you give them a tip and they can't give u any comps or upgrades you will get ur money back.

Did it at the Mirage last year, got upgraded to a much better room and got $50 food and beverage credit.

$20 between card and ID. Make sure you practise doing it so you don't get the yips.

The hotel wants you to have a great time, so you talk about it with your friends and family by telling them how awesome of a time you had. Word of mouth is still he strongest form of advertising and the hotels know this.

                Example ---

                -Honeymoon
                -Mentioning Engagement
                -Business Critic
-That you might actually be interested in buying a unit,
                -Your work for a Newspaper
-That you are a writer for a magazine
-That you are doing a report on the hotel for a press release about what ever news is happening at that time lol
-Mentioning you we're referred by a friend that received an upgrade when they checked in (high pressure approach, you might want to wink!)
-Telling them you work for TripAdvisor lol (would love to see the look on their face)
-Mentioning anything about working in the travel industry
-Mentioning that you own a hotel in another city

Example" I am here for my 2 year anniversary. My friend told me about this place and how the services are unmatched, he even got a room upgrade when he checked in (haha) They wouldn't want to under-shine their friends experience now would they (ha)

Desk: Hi! Welcome to Hotel X!

                Guest: Hey, how are you?

Desk: Just wonderful, sir. Checking in?

                Guest: Yeah, we -

(The guest puts an arm around his female companion.)

Guest: We're checking in - just got off the flight and we're eager to get this vacation started!

Desk: Certainly, sir! Bear with me for a moment...

(Desk clerk types away at the computer system. She continues the conversation while looking down.)

Desk: So what brings you to Las Vegas?

Guest: Well, we're here to celebrate our five year wedding anniversary -

                Desk: Oh, how sweet!

                Guest: Absolutely.

Guest's Wife: And we're here to reconfirm our love -

(The married couple looks into each other's eyes, letting the gaze linger a bit... almost uncomfortably so.)

Guest's Wife: With a renewal of our nuptials.

                Desk: That. Is. SO. WONDERFUL!

(The guest breaks the gaze to turn towards the Desk clerk with a plastered on smile.)

Guest: It is wonderful... and, honestly, really works out for me. See, I was invited a couple months back by my buddy to be involved in this elaborate engagement ceremony. He's staying here at Hotel X -

                Desk: Really?

Guest: Yeah! He loves this place - always stays here. Raves about the suite's he's somehow always able to get. "At price" or something? Anyway, yeah, uh, he's going to have the whole thing at The X Restaurant.

                Desk: Wow!

Guest: It's going to be great, I just know it. I mean, he and I go WAY back, you know? We both started at the same company, worked our way up the chain from reviews to senior editors.

(The Desk clerks cocks her head up for a moment.)

                Desk: Reviews?

Guest: Well, yeah, we both work at Hotel Review Site.

Guest's wife: "Work"? Please, stop being modest! You practically run the place!

(The guest lets out a hearty laugh.)

Guest: Please, honey! I only just oversee the Vacation Destination and Recreations division.

Guest's Wife: Ha! What a dear! He's just too afraid of mentioning his position. Probably -

(The guest's wife plays with her husband's watch as she goes on.)

Guest's Wife: - just embarrassed cause my father is the CEO of Hotel Chain Z. Doesn't want to make it look like he's getting a promotion because of that and all...

(The Desk clerk finally looks up, eyes glazed over and staring in the general direction of the couple... and shoves a packet of papers over the counter.)

                Desk: Take. Any. Room. Want.

Based on your formula, I'm going to attempt this when I arrived on Wednesday. I've changed some of the details (ie. renewing nuptials), but you've got the jist of it. It's going to be a marvelous piece of acting and will report back how it works.

I'm so gonna do this tomorrow at Planet Hollywood. Can't wait to see the response I get from the desk clerk when I say, "I'm here celebrating with my best friend and her husband for their honeymoon. They both chose me to be their Honorary Man of Honor for their wedding ceremony. And as a thank you for dealing with all of their stress and b.s. for the big day they invited me to tag along and paid for my trip. It would be amazing to have separate suites instead of the adjoining room option so I don't have to hear them enjoy things too much."

The Sandwich is def a move anyone can pull off to acquire nicer digs. July of last year, I stayed at the PH Towers and successfully pulled it off. I sandwiched a $20 and went from being in a 1 bedroom suite on a lower floor to a corner 1 bedroom suite in a much higher floor with an amazing view.
