Tipping Front Desk for Room Upgrade?

I have pulled the $20 "sandwich" tip twice at Hard Rock. The first time I was upgraded from the older hotel to HRH for free. The second time I was upgraded from a HRH room to one with a better view. The second time the front desk girl actually apologized that she couldn't do more. I thought that was nice, it wasn't like I gave her that much $$$.
