  • Throwback Trip Reports - Vegas I

I’m going to try to write a series of trip reports for my past trips to Vegas. Some of these will be more complete than others based on the length of time that has passed, the amount of alcohol that had been consumed, and the sheer number of nights that have been spent in Vegas. Luckily this first one is pretty complete.

    Vegas I
    Dates: August 13th - August 15th 2011
Hotel(s): Rivera Parking Garage, Golden Nugget
Cast: Max (22), Nikki (21), Trixie (22) [Names changed]

Background: This was part of a 7 day road trip from a northern California college town down HW 1 to LA and then over to Las Vegas, and up the California/Nevada border and back to home. I’m a relatively average guy, my girlfriend is the beautiful Nikki, and my best friend is Trixie, who just recently came out as a lesbian to herself and her friends. Trixie had been to Vegas with family before she was 21, while both Nikki and I had never been.

    Day 1

We arrived in Vegas in a rented Nissan Versa that had literally every square inch of space packed with camping supplies, food, and clothing for 3 people that needed to last 7 days. We had already been camping at beaches for the days going along the coast so we are definitely not rested or prepared at all for what is to come. Luckily we had spent the previous two days sleeping on the floor of our friend’s parent’s home in LA so we had freshly showered (thanks Brittney, she becomes a Vegas regular in future trips). Being cheap, young people, fresh out of college, we decided that for our first night in Vegas instead of renting a hotel room we would stay with friends far out in the middle of the Vegas suburbs. We parked in the Riviera parking garage because, at least during 2011, they gave a free buffet when you signed up for their player’s card.

The buffet at the Riviera was so horrible all of us decided that had we paid the $20 this buffet was charging to eat there, we would have demanded our money back. Every single item was overcooked, cold, or both. We began drinking by our car in the parking lot (classy) and then drank some more, and before we knew it we had figured out that none of us were going to be capable of driving if we really partied through the night. We then made the decision that we should just keep partying until we could check into our hotel room the next day. Worst Vegas mistake ever.

Since I’m a planner, I had already set us up with a promoter for the two days we would be in Vegas and we were on the guestlist for Rain our first day. We were all total newbies when it came to the club scene, only being familiar with house parties and smaller town bars. We decided that since we were going to be drinking, taking the bus to the Palms would be the right call because cabs were for suckers with too much money (feel free to laugh at our stupidity). We arrived somewhat late, around 11:30pm, since we had to change in the Riviera bathrooms and then walk to Caesars and then take the 202 line to the Palms (efficient, right?).

When we arrived, Rain had a giant mob of people standing near the entrance. No line, much less a guestlist line, and absolutely no staff controlling the crowd. After a while of standing in the mob, I luckily ran into our promoter, Chris Hornak, who was visibly stressed out. He had a bunch of other groups he was supposed to be getting in and was working on getting the groups who had arrived early in as soon as possible. At one point he said he could get the 2 girls from our party in but I would have to wait back. We weren’t exactly comfortable with this, but in this horrific chaos he was pretty much the only way we were ever doing anything. They went in and I was placed in a line with other guys he was supposed to be getting in. The waiting had begun.

He was getting more and more girls in and I was getting more and more worried that I had been totally screwed over. Eventually he started to get guys in and after an hour and a half I was in. As not-smoothly as this went, I’m still amazed any of us got in since the mob outside the club was probably 200-300 deep, with absolutely no organization and almost no movement.

Rain was great, and after 7 more trips to Vegas there definitely was a magic that night that has rarely been surpassed. We danced for hours in the middle of the dance floor right under the awesome pyrotechnics. This was back when Rain might not have been the best club on the strip but it still had some impressive showmanship with acrobats on hoops hanging from the ceiling, bubbles, and the massive amount of fire. It’s sad that none of the larger clubs have invested in pyrotechnics since that was a really unique experience, but I think I’ve heard LiFE at SLS has some so maybe that’s already changed. The DJ that night was DJ Pauly D, who none of us at the time had any knowledge of as we weren’t exactly the Jersey Shore watching type. We actually saw him walk toward the entrance during our previous time as part of the mob and the whole crowd went wild while we did not even know what there was to be excited about.

He was horrifically obnoxious, saying his own name over and over in case we had forgotten who was in charge of the music. Now talking to the crowd and doing some basic hype work is one thing, but to repeatedly totally cut the music to say “This is DJ Pauly D!” over and over was more than annoying. They threw giant foam fists into the crowd so you could fist pump with even more vigor and Trixie amazingly caught one. Fantastic times, especially after his obnoxiousness became more of a joke than a nuisance. I think I ended up snagging a torn fist that someone in the crowd had dropped, and we just kept dancing eventually realizing how much value a place to sit has.

Around 4AM we decided our feet hurt and we were done for the night. We went outside to the bus stop and waited for a bus. We seemed to have just missed one and decided that we could walk to the strip faster than waiting for the next one. Did I say worst Vegas mistake ever already? Nope this was definitely worse. We walk toward the strip and for some drunk reason (involving a lack of sidewalks?) we decide that cutting through the Rio was a good idea. We get lost in Rio’s casino, and walk in circles and circles until we finally get outside of the casino building, but we seem to be in some sort of industrial area near the pool complex. We continue to roam in this area that we obviously shouldn’t be in and get more and more lost, with our feet hurting more and more. I’m pretty sure we’re actually in an area that should have had “Do Not Enter. Employees Only.” Eventually we find our way back into the casino and the location of the free shuttle service to the strip but it doesn’t run for a least a couple hours more. The girls decide to call a cab while I’m still drunkenly thinking walking is the best plan ever. The cab comes and I get in reluctantly, but thank God since I have no idea how we could have walked that at this point.

Good start - nice to see this POV. We all make mistakes when we're inebriated, you just got some exercise out of it. And that's a surprising amount of detail for 4 years gone by.

    Keep it up, sir!

Yeah, walking from The Palms to the Strip. That sounds like a great, drunk idea.

Hell, I walked from the Venetian to the Monte Carlo sober one night because it seemed like a good idea. So whom am I to judge?

Looking forward to the rest of this.

Awesome throwback TR! I used to be a huge fan of the Palms clubs. Rain was good, but Moon/Playboy Club were my favorite.

This will show my age a bit, but not something I am afraid of. My first trip to Vegas was in college for Spring Break. Our first night there was Mike Tyson's first fight back after being in prison against Frank Bruno. We were broke college kids, so we were staying at the Westward Ho (for the kids out there, it used to be next to Circus Circus). None of us had ever been to Vegas, the fight was down at MGM. We walked past Stardust (also old school Vegas) and got to Treasure Island and could see the MGM sign in the distance. We figured maybe a half mile or so, and decided to walk down to get close to the fight. Common Vegas mistake everyone needs to make once.

Omg I remember seeing Paul oakenfold at rain in jan 2011 for my 21st bday... I knew where that's where I wanted to be... Plus moon and playboy and ghostbar were all so awesome... Palms was my go to hotel. I remember staying at rio and walking home to the rio from imperial palace (clearly a broke college kid) and getting super lost...all at like 9 am.. what a trip.

Thanks for the all the positive feedback! My plan is to post ~1 day of each trip every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday around noon until we’re caught up to the present. This first Trip Report is going to be one of the most detailed since no one forgets their first time (also it all kind of blends together when you do week long trips and drink as much as we do).

Day 2 (Really there are no definitive beginnings and ends of days in Vegas sometimes)

We take the cab and arrive at the Riviera parking garage. Now back when we decided to not stay at the friend’s house we all had said we were going to stay up all night and sleep as soon as we checked into the hotel. Upon arriving the girls immediately decide sleeping in the car is the right call. I can’t sleep in cars or on planes, it’s just something I’ve never been able to do, so I, drunk, tired, and now alone, begin to gamble.

I head into the Riviera, find a low limit roulette table and start to win, and win, and win some more. I cash out and continue on to $1 slots and amazingly keep winning. I say what the hell and move onto $2 slots and somehow keep winning (this amount of luck has never been repeated). I’m more than satisfyingly ahead at this point so I return to the car and ask the girls to wake up so we can go check into the hotel room and I can finally get some sleep, but instead they won’t wake up and just want to keep sleeping. Frustrated, I reenter the casino to look for anything to do that isn’t gambling.

Now many people focused on nightlife haven’t probably stepped inside the Riviera, but it was a pretty sad place in 2011, and since they just this month decided to close it and turn it into convention space I assume it never really improved. I found a pub that was closed, a tiny café with no one in it, and a lot of “Renovations Coming Soon!” signs. Eventually in my drunk, tired, and alone state I decide high limit slots would be a good idea (I mean I can’t lose, why not go bigger?). I lose a ridiculous amount of money in record time without ever winning a single pull.

I return to the car, now adding upset and angry to my list of emotions, and the girls finally wake up. I’m pissed off at them for not doing what we had agreed to do, but mostly at myself for my drunken sense of invincibility that led to my losses. I refuse to talk to them while we walk the strip trying to kill some time, and I’m generally just in a bad mood, but eventually I come to terms with my rookie mistakes and we’re all back to being excited about going to XS tonight. We grab something quick to eat and after returning to the car, we drive downtown and check into the Golden Nugget. We immediately fall asleep as soon as our heads hit the pillows.

After waking up quite late in the day, we go resupply our mixers and quickly get ready to pre-game for our night out at XS. We’re all pretty sore from all the dancing and walking last night, so we figure we should pre-game pretty significantly to numb the aches and try and keep motivated. We drink, and drink, and drink even more.

Trixie, having recently embraced her lesbianism and now a decent amount drunk, decides she is willing to have a threesome with me to have an opportunity to have sex with my girlfriend. I’m totally down, but while there is some mutual boob grabbing, Nikki isn’t quite comfortable with it. Trixie gives us some private time and this golden opportunity sadly never happens again. I’ve regretted this a bit over the years (ok, more than a bit), but realistically we we’re all probably too drunk to be making those kinds of decisions and losing that friendship probably wouldn’t have been worth it.

We continue to pre-game, and Trixie, likely being more discouraged and lonely than usual, goes a bit overboard. Who hasn’t done that a least once in Vegas? We finish getting ready and quickly head out to the bus stop to go down to XS with the plan of making it there earlier so we don’t have to deal with another ridiculous line.

All of this is a little hazy but I’m pretty sure I’ve got this all right. Trixie begins feeling ill as soon as we get on the bus. There is major traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard (as usual) so it is taking quite a while to get to the Wynn. While we’re still on the bus, Trixie suddenly says that she is going to throw up, but luckily Nikki has a plastic bag in her purse that she uses to keep her pair of flats from touching the rest of her stuff (the limited amount of time one can stand in heels was established last night). Trixie throws up just as the bag reaches her face, all the bus goers give us the out-of-towner eyeroll, and then we arrive at the Wynn. Trixie runs to the bathroom and throws up, and throws up, and throws up some more. Trixie, the trooper that she is, decides she’s still not giving up on our going to XS, even though she isn’t feeling anywhere near 100%. As we are walking to the entrance I realize I had left my ID in the hotel room! We then learn that lack of ID is one of the few Vegas mistakes with no solutions (one mistake that I have never made again).

Having been thoroughly defeated by our drunken mistakes, we all return to the room. Trixie rests a bit and Nikki and I drink a bit more (the only solution to drunken mistakes in these early trips seems to be more drinking). This is where the details stop and the conflicting stories begin. What happens next might have included a second try to get to XS, a missed bus stop somewhere, some arguing about where we were, and Nikki feeling ill and laying on fake grass somewhere? We’ll never really know exactly what happened, I think all of us were pretty much way over our personal limits at that point, but all of us agree this was night was a pretty solid failure. Luckily in our 50+ nights in Vegas since, things have only ever gone slightly worse (and usually to other people in our party).

The final part of Trip I, I’ll try to make sure to get the first part of Trip II posted Monday!

                              Day 3

We all wake up really early completely hung over and decide to head down to the pool at the Golden Nugget. Their pool is fun and crowded, but a bit too family-oriented for my tastes. Trixie rides the slide that goes through the shark tank endlessly and I get some much needed relaxation. We change, pack up, and check out.

During this road trip we were mostly gaining sustenance from such grandiose fare as peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and tortillas with marginally melted shredded cheese. Since the unbelievably underwhelming buffet at the Riviera, we hadn’t eaten anything better than a quick bite of fast food. We decided we were going to have to go to one of the better buffets Vegas had to offer, so we trekked to the Bellagio’s buffet. We managed to just catch the change over from lunch to dinner (anything to save a buck) and ate for literally hours. Highlights: sea bass, ahi poke, desserts. Having returned to the Bellagio’s buffet in subsequent trips, I feel it will never live up to this first experience, but that easily can be explained by our extreme hunger.

On the agenda for the day is going to a strip club, and Trixie and I had previously decided on the Palomino Club based on the fact that they are the only club in Vegas to have full nudity and a full bar. I hear a lot of other clubs mentioned on here but The Palomino shouldn’t be overlooked. We’ve had a fun time there on multiple trips and the uniqueness of full nudity and a full bar can definitely be appreciated. None of us had ever been to a strip club previously, so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. When we first arrive we are pretty intimidated by the shady factor around the place. It’s definitely in a part of town you don’t really want to walk around and the security at the entrance is definitely a different level of serious compared to the clubs. We arrive relatively early in the night with our own transportation so it’s just a 2 drink minimum per person, and the driver can buy branded water bottles instead of alcohol (free souvenir!).

Inside we sit down at the stage, Nikki on my left, Trixie on my right, and start watching. Nikki was relatively embarrassed, while Trixie and I were beginning to get more comfortable with the concept. I had previously read about the ATM fees so I had luckily already broken down $20s at Golden Nugget’s casino cage.

There was a very large guy sitting near the stage who moves next to Trixie and he’s extremely drunk and talkative with our group. We heard from one of the cocktail waitresses that he supposedly had been in the place since it opened that morning. At this point he was so drunk he was asking us “Is that girl attractive? I can’t tell anymore, should I tip more?” I went along with it and tried to keep the strippers getting paid (strippers before strangers?). He’s a little obnoxious and clearly really drunk so we come up with an excuse to switch seats so I’m sitting next to him so Trixie doesn’t have to. The place is fun but it’s still pretty early and definitely nowhere near full.

Eventually a couple of groups come in and begin making it rain with some regularity and the drunk guy next to me is helped out of the club and hopefully thrown into a taxi. We stay for another hour or so, and now with a more fun crowd, have a great time, but it’s already far later than we had planned on leaving. Trixie wanted to get a lap dance, but sadly she was never approached by a girl possibly due to our seating arrangement and she was too embarrassed to go up to one of the girls and ask for one. This is something that luckily was corrected in one of our future trips.

We leave The Palomino and end our time in Vegas with an exciting high-speed ride north through the desert night with a gas tank that isn’t nearly full enough to not worry about getting to our next stop along the road trip. I highly recommend US-95 if all you’ve ever driven is the I-5 route to go from Vegas to northern California. Google might say it takes an hour longer, but the wide stretches of desert disagree. I’d definitely make sure you have a full tank leaving Las Vegas though, it seems like gas stations aren’t frequently found in the middle of a desert, and at least in 2011 some of the few along the way were closed after midnight.

Quick reviews of places we visited:
Riviera Buffet: * - but only if it’s free, otherwise no stars
Rain: ***** - amazing first club, although it never was quite as good in subsequent trips
Golden Nugget: *** - relatively nice hotel, but being downtown isn’t worth it
Bellagio Buffet: ***** - highly recommended
Palomino Club: **** - good times, but just a tad bit too shady
