  • Engagement trip! September 9-12th

Forgive me if this isn’t the best. I have been crushing beers and am now onto the scotch. First off for the last year I have been on this forum almost daily it started with researching things for a bachelor party and now I just love Vegas so much that it’s part of my daily reading. Thank you very much to everyone who posts and shares their knowledge. It does not go unappreciated. I enjoy reading other people’s TR’s so I figured I would post one even though it’s incredibly lame compared to some of the stuff that goes on in the threads.

After a bachelor party in Vegas in July I began planning something I had been waiting to do for quite some time. Getting engaged. I originally wanted to do Boston or another city we had visited (Chicago, Vegas or San Francisco), but for us Boston always held a little extra room in our hearts. Luckily for this post there was a massive MS convention going on in Boston the time I wanted to go so I turned my sights to Vegas. I was able to get flights from Toronto to Vegas direct for $510 a piece, from my research that was as cheap I found in the months of checking. Anyone else find something better? I booked and immediately got giddy. Shortly after booked at The Cromwell for a decent price. Started planning and I am proud to say she had no idea of the surprise vacation until I told her 5 days before. SCORE!

The flight was a nightmare. Flight delayed about 4 hours. Saw John Stewart in the airport which was cool but not worth for 4 hours of Vegas time! The flight was brutal. Turblence was as bad as I have experienced. There was a time or two where I was ready to go into my carry on and get the ring out because I was scared we were going down. I’m still here so obviously we didn’t go down.

Arrived at the Cromwell. Fantastic property. I was ready to try the $20 trick and had it in my pocket but got cold feet. I hadn’t read anyone trying it at the Cromwell. We were staying Tuesday and checking out Friday so I suppose odds were pretty darn good. Checked into our room. I have to say I love the Cromwell rooms, it’s dark and maybe a little cramped for a basic room but the furniture we both loved. Lots of leather. An hour later we were greeted with a welcome sangria. CRUSHED IT! I had set up a comp guest list with Chris Traer for the Yacht Club. It was one of the few things I had to do in Vegas. Looking back I might not have had to do it being a guest of the Cromwell but I didn’t see any mention of Tuesdays being free for guests on the site. Chris was great with the texts and we got in no problem. Thank you sir! Now I’m a bit older (31) and not a club guy but there is something about entering a club in Vegas that gets me every time. I felt that way my first time I entered Tryst and when we entered the Drai’s and John Newman’s “Love me again” was playing I got that rush like “we made it”. Hope it’s not just me lol. We dressed conservatively and regretted it! By the end of the night we wish we had dressed in our swimwear oh well. Crushed some shots and drank a lot of Macallan 12. Thanks to the bartender for the heavy pours, big tips early will pay in the end. Drai’s is honestly such a beautiful space and I can’t say enough about it. We ended up sitting with our legs in the pool having a great time. They had a massive net of beach balls over one of the pools. I was eyeballing them hard! Eventually they let the dogs out and people had a great time with them. Maybe nobody more than me! The next morning my shoulder hurt from my super spikes. I guess no pain no gain. We headed back to the room pretty tipsy and a beach ball as a souvenir! Absolutely fantastic time!

    Pics or it didn't happen!

I have found direct flights from Toronto to Vegas for less than that before. It was only cheap for a short period of time, but if you check at the right times, you can find it! Congrats on your engagement too!

Woke up in the morning feeling great! My girlfriend was complaining about how her eye was hurting. I wanted to propose on our anniversary in the morning because I wanted to do it as soon as possible. Not sure if that explains my motivation. But basically I have been wanting to get engaged for a good while but wasn’t willing to go into debt and wanted to do it how I wanted to. Now that I was on the cusp I just wanted to take the Nestea plunge. So with her complaining about her eye in the washroom I riffled through my socks and got the ring ready. In the immortal words of Kevin Macalister in Home Alone “this is it don’t get scared now!” Dropped down to one knee and dropped the bomb. Tears everywhere. Fellas don’t rush this shit. Hopefully you only have to do it once so make it count and do it how you and hopefully the love of your life want it. I can say mission accomplished! Except she would have liked pictures taken but forget that too much gets shared. This was a moment between the two of us!

Hit up the Cromwell's free breakfast. Pretty good spread that apparently they have stopped now that Giada’s serves breakfast. That’s too bad it was a nice perk and a dolla saver. There were these interesting slices of who knows, they kind of looked like cheesecake. I was intrigued and put one on my plate and at some. It was red with my white something or others on there. Had a bit and it was rich and creamy. Not sure what to make of it. Had another bite and I started thinking that it might have been straight butter. Hopefully nobody saw it and thought I was a serial killer. I chucked it aside and asked a server what it was. Confirmed, red current butter. Would have been a real downer but instead I just looked at my fiance’s ring.

Pretty low key day. We went to the pool at the Cromwell (Drai's). Kind of cool seeing the opposite end of the spectrum from last night. It was rammed with everyone and in the morning there was maybe 8 people. Went to Giada’s for lunch. Fantastic eats, we just split a bunch of different plates. A little shopping and then went to dinner at the Capital Grille at the Fashion Mall. It might seem like a waste to celebrate such an occasion, in Vegas, at a chain but we have always had great meals there and never been to the Vegas spot. The view was amazing! Facing the Wynn and the strip. Just fantastic. I really wanted to go to the Cosmo for a drink after dinner but we were so full that we settled for Bound in the Cromwell. Observed a lady of the night try to pick up 3 guys behind us. She was a trainwreck. Fantastic entertainment for us!

Like I said that was it for the day. Pretty low key but obviously one of the best days of my life.

Final post! Thanks for reading. Thursday was the final push. I had signed up for VIP for Free and was getting texts and signed up for EBC. I needed to know if it was too good to be true or not lol. Worst case we were going to be back at Drai’s.
Did our usual breakfast and swim then had a Myvegas day. Went to the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay then did the Bellagio for a buffet and all you can drink. We then took a nap after all of the eating. Headed to Tilted Kilt at the Linq for the Ravens and Steelers game. Started pre gaming with peach vodka and red bull. Got a text confirmation from Colin and we were on. It was a pretty cool feeling having a massive limo roll up to the casino for you. Colin was an awesome little ginger dude. Threw him $20 for picking us up. There were two hood rats in the car already. We talked about how it sucked to be me because I didn’t get free open bar. Meh whatever I was just happy to go somewhere. Guess who didn’t learn from Tuesday’s lesson of wishing to have swim clothes for night swim? That would be us! Waited in line for maybe 30 minutes luckily for us the line was exploding behind us. Pretty sure I saw Johnny Castles from adult film fame in lime, smoking Asian girl with him. Well done bro! Got in as promised with no cover and the lady friend got open bar until midnight. Not sure if the lady open bar is standard or if it was a result of being on a staff guest list but to me that’s amazing. Call me easy to please lol. Got in and ordered a double Macallan 12. Shout out for having nicer plastic glass wear than Drai’s and the massive pour I got. Call me crazy but EBC almost seemed too big. Anywho after walking we saw a lily pad that wasn’t occupied. We sat there for about two hours and never got kicked out! We made a lot of friends who wanted to either sit or leave their clothes while they jumped in the pool. Wish we were that smart! Lily pad was great for starting conversations and making a few friends who wanted to sit and relax. Met some really cool people. We kicked it for a while and left.
Biggest regret, not bringing swim wear to night swim. Don’t be a chump!
We had a late flight on Friday and killed time walking around and going to the outlet mall. When we were having our last meal there was a genuine feeling of sadness or uneasiness of not knowing when I would come back to this amazing city again. Leaving the Cromwell we asked for a cab but instead the attendant hooked us up for with hotel car for free. Very cool and the kind of generosity that made us love the Cromwell and its staff. Totally unnecessary but little things like that make a big difference. That was all she wrote for our trip. Thanks for reading!

Congratulations on your engagement and thanks for sharing your report!
EastCoast: "I will preach. Vegas is easy. So easy. Either be rich or good looking (or mooch off someone who is one of those). If you are neither, then sit back, let the rich and/or good looking people sort their shit out, and then take their scraps. Booking early is not going to get you ahead of the rich and/or good looking people. Sucks unless you are rich or good looking. But that's what makes Vegas so great. It is completely transparent."
