  • What's up with "under-age Vegas"???

We are Vegas newbies. My one and only visit to Vegas was in '96, and this was my gf's first visit.
I knew Vegas was going to be very different than what I remembered, and I was good with that... it was like going for the first time for both of us. But I never dreamed it would be THIS different.

What neither of us expected was the transformation from "sin city" to an all ages family destination. WTH??
I mean walking the strip felt more like I was walking around a Six Flags park. We were getting stuck behind parents walking toddlers and pushing strollers. There were kids everywhere from the hotel lobby, to the gaming areas, to even some of the smaller bar areas. I saw kids staring at the newspaper machines filled with porn as their parents dragged them along the strip. Half of these parents were carrying their yard-glass drinks in one hand and holding their kid's hand in the other. The other half of the parents looked at everyone else in disgust (I'm assuming for drinking openly and/or being half drunk). And don't get me started on the kid sized t-shirts that say things like "don't tell mom what happened in Vegas"...

On another topic... my gf and I like to dress fashionable, especially for a night out. And I remember Vegas being a place where the women got to dress well out of their modesty and get their sexy on. Well, walking thru the casino dressed for the evening got us so many looks of contempt that it became hysterical to us. (FYI, I was wearing tailored designer jeans, a bright button up, a vest, and dress shoes... she was wearing a short, fitted, deep plunge halter dress with pumps). I'm sorry that you're overweight, married, totally un-sexy, and sitting at a slot machine in your khaki shorts, tank top, and flip-flops, with your 3 kids whining at you 'cause they're bored stiff. Don't look at us like WE'RE the ones that don't belong.
And even when we finally got to the clubs, we were amazed that the dress was still quite casual. I mean, the ladies in the clubs were dressed well for the majority... but shorts, sandals, and t-shirts or polo's were the dominant mens apparel.
We never made it into any mega-clubs (one of our huge disappointments) where I expect better dress would be mandatory, but it still amazed me that dudes back home in our simple New Hampshire dance clubs dress better for a night out with the ladies. LOL.

We really want to return to Vegas some time, to experience the activities that we missed (mega night clubs, pool party day clubs, gambling, etc), but that will probably never happen if Vegas continues to follow this family-friendly pursuit.

Just curious...what hotel did you stay in, and what clubs did you go to? I come across the occasional family in Vegas...but not since my stay at Circus-Circus have I experienced anything close to what you've described. Just want to make sure I steer clear of everywhere you went
Like all great travelers, I've seen more than I remember, and remember more than I have seen.

I definitely saw some of this at the Palms when I stayed a couple of years ago. Ha, but you'd probably avoid staying out there anyway, so I'm not telling you anything new!
I'm not bitchy, I'm just drawn that way.

Well, first about 10 years ago vegas WAS pushing to become more of a family friendly environment. The last 5 years they've moreso embraced being "sin" city, which is why you see the family friendly hotels turning to crap (Excalibur, Circus Circus, etc) and the newer hotels are much more adult oriented - Wynn/Encore, City Center, etc.

No offense to anyone here, but I think it's absurd to take children to vegas. I can understand a family road trip for a day or something, but even then I don't think Vegas is any place for children. I know when I was a kid my family took me to vegas on a cross country road trip - only stayed a day and hang around circus circus, but that was going on 20-25 years ago. I just think parts of vegas lack class and having kids on the casino floor or around while you are drinking that yard stick is one of those things. If you stay at a nicer hotel and go to nicer clubs you will avoid most of that, but there will always be some classless people.
If you have to ask how much it costs, you probably can't afford it! That being said, it's Vegas and doesn't hurt to try!

        Planning
        2014 - March 13-16 - Bachelor Party
        2014 - June 5th - 9th (maybe) - Big 30.

We stayed at the Venetian. But we were surrounded by kids everywhere we went. Perhaps it is because it was Independence Day Weekend? Although many people that I spoke to said it was really the typical Vegas environment now. GF and I agree with headstrong... to us it seems completely inappropriate and irresponsible.

I will add... we have Native American casinos nearby in CT, and while families do stay there too, they are of minority and it is often centered around specific entertainment events. And minors are strictly forbidden from entering any gambling or drinking areas.

As for the clubs, I know we hit Hyde in Bellagio... and a few other clubs of similar size/genre. We started off with dinner and cocktails in casino restaurants, and followed the lead of friends from one casino club to the next, drinking of course, so I lost track of just where we went, lol.

Ive noticed this too... I try and not walk up and down the strip and take cabs not for necessity but because of this. Tons of families every time ive been. My brother does this with his 2 year old... i tell him to quit being cheap and hire a freaking baby sitter for 2 days but he claims he "doesn't wanna be away from his kid" but then he shouldn't be going to vegas then... just my opinion.

I don't experience what you experienced at all... but I never walk the strip ever... and in places like Cosmo/Aria/Wynn the attire is pretty much what you described as yourself...

(It also might help that I have an auto ignore setting for children!!)

                +1
Same here....maybe I'm just not paying attention to those people so it doesn't register - but I don't really notice that many families

The Venetian is HUGE so you're always going to have a cross section of people, and it was Independence Day weekend. Plus if this was Saturday night most of the action was down at MGM from 5-10 for the UFC fight. A quick walk through there would have shown you the Vegas you were seeking.

Sin City is alive and well. I think you might have been so shocked by the kids that you didn't notice the people who were dressed up.

After this last trip I'm going to rethink summer months. There was a lot of kids on the strip. Never really got too annoyed, but if I can avoid it or go at times kids are school it's the way to go

The only reason I was even on the strip for my last trip was because the friends I went with are cheap. Kids only register if I almost run them over, and honestly I could give a damn if there are kids in Vegas they're not going to the clubs or pool parties.

I've been going since 06 and haven't noticed a dramatic shift

But I rarely walk the strip and auto-ignore kids as well

As far as dress, I only go to the big clubs so thats not an issue

As far as ppl staring, I'm loud and obnoxious in Vegas so I'm used to it
