  • First Trip Report, First Time Solo (2/10 - 2 /12)

Since joining this site I’ve enjoyed reading the trip reports and seeing how others do Vegas. These trip reports are not only entertaining but are invaluable resources for trip planning. I hope to see people continue the trend of posting these, so without further ado here is my contribution.

So it’s Tuesday, I’m spending time around my place already bored and realizing that I don’t have to work or do anything until Saturday. I’m seriously thinking to myself that I can’t spend the next few days not doing anything so I come up with this bright idea to take a spur of the moment solo trip. I was a little hesitant at first since I’ve never been solo before but finally mustered up the courage to go at it alone. I then went online found a cheap plane ticket, booked a cheap room for two nights at Planet Hollywood (2/10 – 2/12), and 30 hours later I was boarding a plane to Vegas.

The flight in to Vegas was uneventful. I will say this, whether it’s the first or the 20th time, every time you see the Las Vegas strip it’s the same feeling of seeing Disneyland as a kid and I absolutely love it. Headed to the taxi line and there was no one waiting, so things are already looking good. Seeing as I only had a backpack with me, the taxi driver already knew I wasn’t a once a year tourist so he knew not to BS me on the route to PH. Arrived at PH a little after 1:30pm and there were approximately 10 people waiting in line for check-in. This was my first time at PH so I wasn’t sure how sandwich friendly they would be. PH only has one line and the next available clerk calls you so I couldn’t even pick the clerk I wanted. I get to the front of the line after about five or so minutes with a $20 sandwich and I get to the desk. I hand her the sandwich and the first thing she says “"Are you tipping me for my service?”" After what felt like an awkward long pause from me, I finally replied and said “"yes I am."” She takes my ID and CC but leaves the $20 on the counter. I asked if there was any way to get resort fees waived and a nice view. She replied that she couldn’t waive resort fees but she’ll see what she can do for the room. She then asks the standard check-in questions and tells me she has put me in a room in the south tower on the 23rd floor (top floor) with a great view. After putting the reservation together she'’s hinting to me that I can take my twenty back. (Tip: Sometimes a smile and being polite/courteous can go a long way). I tell her to keep it, seeing as I’m planning on hitting the casinos for a bit on this trip, I wanted to get all of the good karma that I can get. I head up to the room and I have this great view of the fountains and strip.

Decided to relaxed in the room for about an hour then head downstairs to get some Earl of Sandwich. After that it was over to the Cosmo for some casino fun. First stop in the Cosmo was to go play some slots for fun. So optimistically, I sit down at a machine that looked like it could be fun and in about 20 mins of play I proceed to lose all of the $40 I put in to the machine. I'’m thinking to myself what happened to the good karma. At this point I’m on my third drink at a new machine and decided to put $20 dollars in hoping for some better luck. After about three spins I hit 8 bonus spins and proceed to win ~$170. There’s that karma I was looking for. After that win I cashed out and decided to try some of E-Craps. After about 2 hours of play and mostly betting the min I turned my winnings from the slot payout. I'm thinking to myself this wasn’t a bad idea to get away for these few days. After about 5 more drinks and me starting to feel really buzzed, I cash out around 7pm with about $350 to head back to the room for a quick nap. Of all the times I’ve been to Vegas I never really took the time out to do the touristy Vegas things so I decided this was going to be the trip to do those things.

After a quick hour nap I got dressed and headed out at 8:30pm to the MGM to go see KA. For those of you wondering, KA was a pretty good show and I recommend it. Although, I probably would'’ve enjoyed it more if I didn’t drink so much before the show and brought a massive drink in with me. After the show I made up my mind that I was going to go out that night. Since it was a Wednesday I was trying to decide whether to go to Light, Hyde, or Surrender. Finally I make up my mind as I get close to the front of the taxi cab and it looks like Surrender will be my destination.

Taxi ride was very entertaining and I'm chatting with the taxi driver about everything. Arrived at about midnight and the GA line was only about 10 people. In fact, there were more people in the guest list line at the time. After a less than 10 minute wait and passing the time chatting with the bouncer I’m in. I get inside and there is a nice sized crowd but not packed in like sardines and definitely a good looking crowd. Scoped out the place and then found my bartender for the night. Ordered a drink and tipped her well to make sure the next drinks will be made strongly and promptly. Now I don’t know if it was because I was rolling solo or if it was because I was just there vibing to the music but women kept finding ways to get close to me, brush up on me, or start a conversation with me. At one point I start thinking to myself that maybe they’re pros so I decided to hit the bar again for another drink. My bartender sees me walking up and comes directly to me even though others were already waiting and makes me a strong second drink. By this time Flosstradamus was spinning. They were a lot of fun with the music and energizing the crowd. At this point I’m really just vibing by myself to the music and casually talking to the people around me. Suddenly this one girl just grabs my arm and wraps it around her. I look over and realize that she wants me to play superman. I guess I’ll save her. I play along and chat with her for a bit until the creepy guy leaves (Tip: Fellas it’s ok to be persistent but after a while it can get creepy. Take the hint that she’s not interested and move on).

After a while on the dance floor I decide to head back to the bar when all of a sudden these two girls grab me and start dancing on me in what can only be describe as sexual assault..lol..but I was loving it, plus they were cute, so they get a pass this time. I then dance with the both of them for a couple of more songs and we're all having fun. At this point, I can now tell that one is a tad bit more interested in me so I dance with her for a few songs solo and bought her friend a drink. Her friend proceeds gives me a thumbs up and smiles. We dance and talk for a little, then we decide it was time to leave and we head back to my room at PH.

    To be continued…

I’m not much of a sleep in type person plus with the sun coming in that naturally wakes me up. I’m not really hungover but definitely feeling it and I think for a split second was I dreaming the events of last night. I look over and see my new female friend from last night laying there and realized it definitely wasn’t a dream. I lay there for a little, she finally wakes up, and we say our goodbyes. After she leaves, I do the standard morning after Vegas check: wallet, cash, cc, kidneys. Everything is there so I can breathe a sigh of relief. It was just after 8:00 at this point so I decided to catch a few more zzzs.

After the additional nap I wake up around 11, get dress, and head downstairs to get some food. With all the great gourmet places in Vegas to eat, I only had one place in mind. I really wanted to eat some Panda Express. Gatorade and Panda Express does the job and I feel completely refreshed for the day. This day was a planned chill day just to get out and do some more touristy things. I’m just going to give a quick run through and not go into details. After lunch, went to the Mirage to see the Secret Garden. Saw a few of the dolphin training sessions which were really cool. The white lions and white tigers were a sight. Left the Mirage and went down to Mandalay Bay to check out the Shark Reef. I really enjoyed the aquarium and would recommend it. Decided to walk back to watch the street performers and pop in some shops. On my way back to PH I was stopped on two separate occasions by Hak promoters trying to get me come that night. The first Hak guy offered me guestlist and comp’d entry until 1 am and later a second guy offered guestlist entry. Seeing as I had an early morning flight I wasn’t really trying to go out that night. (Since I’ve always went with a group of guys I’ve never been offered guest list entry before. I’ve always assumed guestlist are mostly for women or mixed groups with an even ratio. Just curious, anyone have an explanation for this. I’m figuring they needed to meet a quota for the night).

The rest of the trip was really uneventful so to wrap this up: went to Holstein’s at the Cosmo and hit the casino some more. Had “The Gold Standard” burger at Holstein's which was really good and ended up walking out of the casino around 1 am with ~$650 in winnings. Went back to PH and slept until 5 am. Grabbed a taxi around 5:30 and headed to McCarran for a flight at 7. In a blur we were landing and I was back home.

Overall, it was a successful trip especially for a last minute trip. I was nervous at first about going solo but now I’m almost ready to go back again solo (Tip: If you’re thinking about, pull the trigger and do it. While there is a certain element missing from not having your crew around, it was nice to do what I wanted to do when I wanted. Also, if you go solo just be sociable with those around you and you won’t feel like you’re solo any longer). Until next time.

I love the solo trips. I love having the freedom to do what I want, when I want. Like you said, as long as you're willing to talk to strangers, you'll have a good time.

I enjoyed it so much that I may sneak in another solo trip before the big MDW trip.

Great TR. Solo trips are always a good way to break up the normal Vegas eat, sleep, rave, repeat with the crew.

Great TR. I am traveling to LV next month for the 1st time solo, and had scouted out the Shark Reef and the Tyson show as my 2 "touristy" things to do. My boss (in his late 40s) goes at least 2x a year and says he wishes he had gone solo more before he had kids and a wife.

On one of my first trips out I got free tickets to KA. I had been drinking all day at the pool and got one of those stupid big drinks going in.... By the midpoint of the show, I was having to close one eye to see the performance.... I got a horrible case of the hiccups and remember absolutely nothing from the moment I stood up after the show. So.... I should see it again sometime, because seeing it in double doesn't count I think. However, I'm gonna have to wait until I am either solo, or 90 years old and don't want to eat sleep rave repeat instead.
