  • January Vegas Trip!

    (Part 1)

Hi all, I found this site before my last trip to Vegas and it's been very helpful! I definitely enjoyed reading TR's during that post-Vegas depression spell and the long build up of anticipation to the next trip so I thought I would share my latest trip.

My apologies for my novel of a report for a 3-day trip, I just couldn’t leave some of it out!

    A little back story first.

I went to college in the SF Bay area so have been LV several times but have since moved back to the midwest, so Vegas or Lake Tahoe are my usual destinations to meet up with my friends who are all still in California for a weekend. Like I said I've been to vegas several times, including multiple one night stops while driving back and forth to california during breaks, many before I was 21 (not much fun.. both the drive and being in vegas under-21). Also I went shortly after turning 21 while in college and then my first post-college meetup trip with friends last Sept which is where the back story really starts...

Last September I went out to Vegas for an extended weekend with 7 friends and 1 friend of theirs who I had not met before. Trip was a good time, but between certain people not being willing to spend the money for bottles and being "uncomfortable with me covering part of their share" (wtf?), "forgetting to eat today" and fouling out and needing to be taken home, and varying interests between club/gambling time and types of music it wasn't the epic trip a few of us had wanted. So me and my friend after enjoying the best day of the trip (Avicii at EBC) but being alone as everyone else had fouled out, assisted the people who were too drunk, or lost interest decided that our next trip would be just the two of us and our other close friend who could hang and make it that epic trip we wanted.

    The planning stages.

Come December text, gChat, and FB messages start circulating about our plans for vegas this year. This group trip quickly evolved into the plans for a 4 trip series spaced throughout 2013. Certain rules were put in place including: not to tell anyone else we were going without them, day-parties and clubs every day/night, and most importantly go HAM. Both of them are big into EDM so who is DJ’ing is always a major part of where we end up going, and I’m fine with that so it works well. We set our target dates for Jan/Feb, May, July/Aug, Oct/Nov. Anyways, obviously this trip report is about the Jan/Feb trip which ended up being scheduled for Thur Jan 24 - Sun Jan 27(last weekend). Now as we lead up to thursday and our departure I asked the guys whether they had mentioned to their housemates that they were going to vegas (both live in different houses, but each with all of our friends, many who were on our previous Sept. trip). They both let their houses know they would be out of town and couldn't do anything that weekend, but up until Wed. night no one else knew we were heading to Vegas. Wed. one guy told his house, the other just never bothered, though they obviously knew pretty quickly from other people.

    The epic trip.

    Day 1: Thursday
I struggle to make it through my day at work on Thursday, being completely unproductive, but finally 4pm rolls around and I head off to the airport. Our two flights were both supposed to arrive around 7:30, but in separate terminals, so we decided we'd play it by ear on how we'd get to the hotel. If I got in early I'd shuttle over there and we'd take one cab, but I got in late, they got in early, so I ended up just taking my own cab and meeting them at the hotel.

We had booked a room at MGM Grand through mLife for a decent price so I arrived there and find them at the check-in desk with some girl who claimed the system was down and had to enter everything by hand, which she still couldn't manage to do very well, so about 20 minutes later we finally have our keys. Head up, unpack, down for blackjack and drinks, get ready, blah blah blah. We had a B1G1 setup at Haze for that night so we cab over and check in for it, turns out we're the 2nd table in, got there when ed suggested getting there, about 10:45, but obviously we would have been fine later. Oh well, we have plenty to drink with 2 bottles for 3 people. Get 1 goose 1 absolut, have a table downstairs back by the back bar, not the best location, but certainly not bad, debate getting a 2nd bottle to get moved to a better spot but decide we don't need 3 bottles for 3 people. We do some drinking, proofread some business emails for each other before vowing no more work for the weekend. Place starts to fill up, we do some work on the bottles, meet some different girls, do some dancing. At one point, my friend with a girlfriend accidentally sends a text about that he just took shots with 2 girls and where the hell are we to her instead of us, so that puts a damper on his night, he hangs out for a bit but eventually decides he needs to head out and do damage control. My other friend had found some girl, so it ends up us two and her and a few of her friends at the table and we finish off the remaining half of a bottle. Talk my friend out of a bottle since its the end of the night, and we shut the place down. Get back to the hotel about 4:30am and crash.

    Day 2: Friday
Somehow I’m up and awake at about 10am after the shades open automatically for some reason. So since I can’t get back to sleep, I shower, and head down to the casino with the intention of playing some poker to make some extra spending money (I pretty much fund a good part of my vegas trips by playing poker back home). As usual for me in MGM, I get lost on my way somewhere, end up grabbing some coffee, breakfast and just playing $5 blackjack since the games I want to play at poker are full and I don’t feel like waiting. A bit later my friends are down by the poker room looking for me so I meet up with them and we start our walk to CVS for alcohol and hangover supplies. My one friend ends up talking to one of the guys promoting his music on the bridge and takes a cd and somehow a small free bag of weed, which me and my other friends proceed to give him crap for the rest of the trip. Not much else happens during the day besides a small bit of gambling in order to get free drinks, and we decide to check out DB’s pong & pool, where we grab some drinks and play some games. Not a bad place to hang out, have some fun, and kill some time from the usual craziness of vegas. We go out for our one actual meal of the trip besides the usual sandwiches and then head back to the room to take some shots and get ready.

We head to XS for Avicii and had pre-sales already but decided to do a 1 bottle table which my buddy setup through a host he had used before (Apparently you can get presales refunded by emailing wantickets after if you get a table instead? definitely good to know for the future). Unfortunately it was raining, which plays a key part in the night. We were in one of the first 2nd floor cabanas right up the stairs from the inside, not a bad spot, the tablespace itself is pretty sick as long as you don’t mind the lack of foot-traffic and either have your own party or bring it back to you. Especially with it raining, the outside by the pool was dead, but it took 20 seconds to get inside so I was fine with it.

    (Part 2)

Now for the rain... it’s coming down pretty good and every time I walk outside I’m slipping all over the place, sometimes on purpose sometimes not. I say to my friend “over/under on my eating shit 4 times tonight?”... foreshadowing. Night goes on and Avicii comes on, I did like the screens in the cabana to at least be able to see the show from there. Well that’s the last thing I remember until I’m in some back room with like 4-5 security/management people around me and an emt cleaning up my face telling me I should get stitches and they want to transfer me to the hospital. I, in my usual completely hammered calmness, ask if I have to and if I can have a mirror or something to look at it. I examine it for a second, ¼” or so long gash right about ½” to the side of my eye and my head is pounding. I decide it’ll be ok, get it bandaged up a bit, sign some forms saying I decline transfer to the hospital, and they walk me out.

Apparently, the story from my friend is I was inside the cabana drinking or dancing or whatever and there was a puddle in the middle of the floor. I slip and smack the side of my face against the granite table top. I then try to get up and sit in the spot where a chair had been, not paying attention that it is no longer there, fall again. While friend is trying to help me up, fall somehow a third time. Security comes in walks me out to get my head looked at and mops up the water. Minutes later apparently there are caution wet floor signs everywhere, haha shocking. I am pretty confident I had a damn good concussion, seeing as I remember none of this since I usually don’t blackout like that (at least major events, walking places when nothing happens? all the time).

LESSON: leather soled shoes + rain + painted concrete + granite tables = NOT a good mix

Anyways, after being walked out I’m by the cab line trying to get ahold of my friends to meet back up. I remember at least one person walking by, pointing at me and being like holy shit dude. I’m sure I looked terrible, bandaged, shirt half covered in blood. Meet up with friends, cab back to the hotel, clean up and re-bandage the wound, change shirts, painkillers etc. They want to go to Drai’s and tell me I should probably call it a night. I convince them and tell them I am going with but I won’t drink anymore. So we head over there, fat line, walk past it up to the front and one of the bouncers goes to my friend “Hey there! What’s up man?” mistaking him for someone he knew apparently, so my friend goes with it with a “Oh Hey man!”, bro hug, and skip the line. Perfectly fine with me. Do some dancing, meet some australian girls, end up getting back to the hotel about 8am.

We’re convinced the “Avicii Curse” as we call it is real, we can never all make it all the way through one of his sets, any of the times we’ve seen him.

    Day 3: Saturday
We’re supposed to be doing GBDC today. We wake up at like 1pm all feeling terrible, basically saying this isn’t happening, oh well, until one friend says F-it YOLO (common theme and mentality for the weekend) we’re doing it. So I text chad that we’re going to be late but we’re heading there, we all shower, I re-bandage the eye and decide it’s gonna be sunglasses the rest of the trip as the black eye is starting to set in too, grab some quick breakfast and grab a cab over to Palms.

Huge shoutout to Chad Noyes, he set us up with a table with a $250 min. Of course we get there, debate whether we’re doing bar spend or just get a bottle but order a round of vodka redbulls and take a lap to check the place out. Get back to the table and I see my buddy grab the bottle menu with that look in his eye, and I think to myself well here we go! Grab a bottle of goose and start partying. We make friends with some fine UNLV girls from the table next to us, drink, dance, and enjoy the great party. (Chad was definitely a cool guy, took great care of us, kept coming by making sure we were alright.) The girls we had met thursday and their guy friend came by and hung out and partied. Killed the first bottle, party still going strong, so f-it lets grab another bottle. Party continues, have a great time, highlight of the trip, finish the bottle and shut the place down.

We head back to the hotel, take some naps, I make a run downstairs to grab some food for us to eat while getting ready. We had made a plan with the same group from thursday night to pregame at their place and then head to XS for Madeon’s opening show of his Vegas residency (had pre-sales again for this). Get out and see a huggge cab line, say screw it and take a town car, worst driver ever, but whatever we got there. Take some shots, do some drinking and head out. We decide again that we’re going to get another bottle so my buddy texts our waitress from the night before, who we had chatted quite a bit with as she obviously seemed bored with everything else, and asks who we should go through and gets a name. Debate cab/walking until my friend appears saying we have a limo worked out, so f it the 3 of us pay for the limo and the whole group piles in.

We get to xs, ask for the guys name at the ropes and get walked in, checking id’s find out one of the girls left her id back at their hotel. So her friends bf runs back to the hotel, and two of the girls wait outside. My two friends, two of the girls, and I go ahead and head in. End up with the cabana right next to the one we had the night before, first one by the stairs. Sounds perfect to me, good sized space for 8 people, and the pool area actually has people around since its not raining tonight, and we already have a good group to party with. We weren’t sure whether the other 3 would get in alright since we only had the one bottle, debated using the wantickets we had with us if we had to, but turns out they weren’t going to be let through but the guy checking id’s came up and said to let them on in. Ended up with 4 guys/4 girls in with 1 bottle and no cover, sounds good to me.

Madeon was pretty sick, put on a good show I thought and we had a good night. Only downside was as usual the dance floor filled up, and the bouncer wouldn’t let me and my friend in as we were following the girls on. Said something along the lines of look I’m going to need a tip for you to get let in. Now I get it and have no problems tipping and usually tip pretty well when I do, but it leaves a sour taste in my mouth when I get specifically asked for one. I just said screw it and headed back to the table, not having smaller bills and sure as hell not giving him that much at that point. Ended up heading out at some point, wandering around, and getting dinner as a group before heading back to hotels.

    Day 4: Sunday
Wake up around 11:30 (thank god for late checkouts), showered, packed and headed out right at noon. Our flights weren’t ‘til 7pm and we had discussed meeting up with the group from last night at a bar during the day, but decided we just wanted to take it easy. It came down to deciding between going to a movie so we could sit/sleep in the quiet/dark or head to the airport to try for earlier flights. We settled on the latter.

Separate terminals again, so we said our goodbyes, great-trips, until-next-times at the cab and headed out. They lucked out and got on a 1:30 flight, I on the other hand, had to suck it up. Only other direct flight was at 5, but it was going to be double what I originally paid for a change fee so I said screw it. Sat miserably for about 7 hours in the airport with my head aching from both the fall and the hangover, sunglasses trying to cover the black eye and cuts, and not having much luck sleeping. Finally got home at midnight, only then to have to struggle to work at 7am monday morning.

I will say this is the first time after a vegas trip where I was ready to head back right away. I’m ready to go back now. Usually for at least a month I’m telling myself ugh never again and no more alcohol. I guess that just means we did it right this time! Plus I’ll have a nice scar right next to my eye to remember it by!

    Hope you enjoyed!
Stay tuned for my next TR after we return for our next trip this spring/summer!

Thanks for the comprehensive report. Good read - looking forward to the next one!
EastCoast: "I will preach. Vegas is easy. So easy. Either be rich or good looking (or mooch off someone who is one of those). If you are neither, then sit back, let the rich and/or good looking people sort their shit out, and then take their scraps. Booking early is not going to get you ahead of the rich and/or good looking people. Sucks unless you are rich or good looking. But that's what makes Vegas so great. It is completely transparent."

Great report. Enjoyed that. Going to Vegas with the right people is one of the most important aspects of planning. Sounds like you chose well this time around.

Couldn't agree with this statement more!

I really think it's the single most important aspect. It's not a coincidence that the only time I didn't have a great time in Vegas was
                A) trip with just me and my ex
                B) trip with two friends who don't drink at all - they are fine on other trips with more people but when it was just the two of them..

Yep, I have a lot of people I consider friends, but only a very small group I would bring with me to Vegas.
