  • Could be being really dumb, but need help with Money

Hi - so I'm a newbie but I've lurked for a number of months. The info I've found here is incredible!

So, my husband and I are coming over for our second trip in November from UK. Last time, we took some cash and used debit cards - however we were stung with high charges and rubbish exchange rates. So I wanted to ask if you have any advice of how we should carry our $$ I didn't want to carry it all in cash (not high rollers or anything with suitcases full of dollars but our travel insurance only covers up to £1200 worth of cash)

Is there anyway around the high charges and rubbish exchange rates I'm not thinking of?

You could look into purchasing some pre-paid Visa cards or travelers checks. I'd also look for a currency exchange that is NOT at the airport. They will have the worst exchange rates. Better yet would be to find one in the UK than stateside. Hope this helps.

Visa travel money. It works like a debit card, without the fees. There is a $3 fee to get cash out of an ATM but no fees to use it as debit. And you can recharge it. I'm from Brazil and that's what my family uses when they visit me in the USA.

One of my friends swears by this method as well, although this article is a few years old it should give you an idea of how they work and pros / cons.

You can send the money to yourself through Western Union.
