  • complementary mistake??

Please excuse my ignorance in this madder. I keep reading about 'sandwich' and checked out ... frontdesktip.com ...
to try and figure out what that all was about... After reading about it on here and the other site and thinking about it a little, Has anyone ever ask for a complementary upgrade only to get charged for it at check out, or find the charge for it later on, on the master card ?? or have them play head games where it was only complementary for one night the rest you pay for??
I would like to try the sandwich trick on my honeymoon trip in the end of Aug at the MGM where I book a 'petite king' room and not sure if this 'tip' still works.

There is never a guarantee that it works, but when it does work then I have never been charged for it afterwards.

Well whats the worst they can say 'no' .... so whats the harm in asking.

I just don't want to see an upgrade fee on my master card after.

Just try it, if you're going to be charged for it they will tell you and you can decline at that point.

Chances are it wont happen. The person accepting the sandwich probably doesnt want you making a big deal about it upon checking out so the charge wont be there

You usually have to sign a form at check-in that shows your rate. Just make sure it's what you are expecting. If you don't have to sign anything then just ask the agent to verify your room rate after they hand you your keys.

              So I am a little thick here...sorry...
I paied for the flight and hotel from website, itravel2000. So when I check in to the MGM at the front desk, I am say my name and give them a confirmation number, they would (I would hope) find me in the system, then I would guess I would have to pay the resort fee's right there and give them my C.C.# now after all this when they are giving me the room card I can slide them a 'sandwich ' and ask "what are the chances of a complementary upgrade?"
do I have all the steps right?

I try to keep it as simple as possible when checking in. I have my credit card and ID ready and fold a $20 or whatever denomination of cash I'm using around my credit card. I smile at the agent and say hello then hand them my cards and say I'm checking in and "am hoping that I could get an upgrade to a [insert room type here] room / suite to help celebrate my [insert actual or fabricated reason here] during my stay".

The agent will type away for a minute and tell you what's possible. If for some reason they can't give you the upgrade you're looking for then I'd ask if they can waive the resort fee (as long as your sandwich wasn't more than the resort fee would be anyway) or just say "thanks for checking but I think I'll stick with my original room" and they will give the money back.

I've never stayed at the MGM but that process has worked for me at multiple places on the strip. Good luck!

Cosmo was pretty good about saying I'll only accept your tip if I'm able to process your upgrade request.

Good point. Most people working at the front desk really do want to help and if they cant they usually decline the sandwich
