The Cosmopolitan has had its ups and downs since opening at the end of 2010. Sure, Marquee is always packed and the bulk of their restaurants are excellent, but their casino often seems quiet -- the opposite of everything else on the property. Yes, things are changing in Las Vegas and not everyone is gambling but Cosmo's Players Club, Identity, takes that into consideration and offers perks to all big spenders in the casino, not just gamblers.
Last night, we were tipped off that Identity has drastically cut back perks for their biggest spenders. Cosmo is a property that seems to define itself by its big spenders, from the bottle poppers at Marquee to the high rollers in the Talon room. After a check of the new Identity comps against the old Identity comps, we noticed a lot of omissions as we climbed membership levels.
Silver members (everyone) still receive nothing really special, just a card. The cutbacks begin when you reach the Gold Level (qualify by earning 20,000 Identity points in a 12-month period).
Gold level members no longer receive a free suite upgrade, which we found to be one of the best perks. Additionally, Gold members will no longer receive a champaign birthday toast, special reservation phone line, turndown service and complimentary Marquee dayclub and nightclub access. Additionally, instead of getting a free movie and access to the fitness center, you have to choose one or the other.
When you reach the highest tier of Identity membership, Platinum, you'll find the most cutbacks. Gone are the personal host and pool host. There are no more insider restaurant tours (meeting chefs, touring kitchens) and no more preferred seating at all restaurants (only Wicked Spoon now). But wait… there's more, err, less.
There are no more complimentary spa treatment and limo rides from the airport. While the website doesn't say that there are room upgrades, we've been assured that there are still room upgrades for Platinum members.
In place of these perks, Platinum members now receive an annual $250 resort credit for a birthday gift and priority valet. Both Gold and Platinum members now receive complimentary WiFi.
That's a pretty big haircut for Identity members on paper. While we like our Cosmo room upgrades and would miss that, we're not sure removing a free movie from our trip is that big of a deal. That said, free limos and spa treatments going away…GASP!
