Sorry im a bit confused how this thing works.

I make a request for a room, how ever they will charge me before i get to see which room it is?

This should help. Basically what you're doing is making a try for a zone and star rating. North strip 5* is going to be Wynncore or Venetian/Palazzo or Trump. So the idea is to know which one Trump is since you can't tell the difference between the other four. Trump is a standard that they try to push. It's been a while so I may have some of this wrong:

Every time you bid you have to include two zones and one is ruled out. Each bid counts against you. You have a limited amount of tries. Each time you use a bid to secure the 5* north strip at a low price and fail, you need to rebid again. Each bid loses you a zone that doesn't have the 5* in it. The North Strip will always have this criteria so the tactic is to select criteria that almost guarantee one of those properties AND another zone that doesn't meet any 5* qualifications. That way each time you bid a zone and fail, you have another dummy zone to use again. For example: you bid 5* north strip at 75$ and use henderson for a dummy zone. Since Henderson doesn't have a 5* zone (this is an example) it would be ruled out IF your 75$ bet was too low. So you bet again, say at 80$ and use west las vegas as a dummy zone. You do this until you have used up all the dummy zones or you have met your price. You may hit a property that meets these criteria (80$, north strip, etc) but that doesn't have a nightclub or casino you know it's trump.

By using that site, they have narrowed down most of the choices, but in the end you won't know 100% until you pay and book. The site explains it in much more detail.

I've been going to vegas 1 or 2 times per year for the last 4 or 5 years. I almost always use (or at least try) Priceline first. To answer the original question about 5-stars at great prices, the answer is YES.

You have to be a bit careful though because you could get a 5-star slightly off the strip such as Trump (blah) or Vdara (not so bad). Neither of these hotels have casinos and are not preferred to Palazzo, Venetian, Belagio and Wynn.

As of last week, the Trump is still in it's own section - "Las Vegas Strip Vicinity North - Condo."
When you first go to the name your own price page in Las Vegas, and if you click on that area of the strip, you'll see that the five star hotel that comes up does not have a casino shown as an amenity.

what happens if priceline keeps rejecting your offer? can you just cancel and get a refund? or are you basically locked in and must put in a bid that they will accept?

You're not obligated to anything if you get rejected. You only have to pay for a room when your bid goes through.

i got 4 rooms at the Palazzo for $145/night for the last weekend in August 2011. That was my first bid, i should have started lower. We called and upgraded to the bella suites for about an extra $25-30/night per room. Even though you book thru priceline, the hotel will let you upgrade, for a fee of course, if the rooms are available.

I was going to, but didnt want to take the chance with 4 rooms. Plus it was a bachelor party... 12 guys, 4 rooms, not worth the risk lol

The good news is that Trump is no longer considered a 5-star property on the North Strip. They moved it out of the boundaries for the Strip, so you're guaranteed either Wynn, Encore, Palazzo, or Venetian.

At least this was the case about 5 months ago.

Well then I think my friend got gypped cause she did the priceline/hotwire thing and she got the Trump lol.

Avoid the Trump if you can. Wish I had known about this Priceline Vegas hotel list before booking. Yes, the Trump is in it's own zone, probably because too many people were getting this hotel that is OFF THE STRIP and DOESN'T HAVE A CASINO.
