  • Interesting Article about Status of Vegas' Nightclub scene from RJ

This "article" should have really been labeled as an opinion piece as he obviously has an issue with the current status of Vegas clubs.

I don't think he is right when he insinuates that the EDM "phase" is over and god save us if we do indeed go back to the stupid celebrity host type of club format, but interesting to read what the supposed nightlife expert from the Vegas' Review Journal has to say about the direction the Vegas nightlife is heading. By the way whenever anyone uses Yelp to make a point about Vegas clubs I immediately stop taking them seriously lol.

Disagree with about 90% of what he says. First, EDM seems to be in a legit crossover stage right now. Its started to move away from being just club music and is more mainstream than ever, which is opening clubs up to draw on a much larger customer base. And honestly, Light group being bought out might open the door for these DJs locked into residencies to play at multiple clubs like it appears Calvin Harris will, which looks like it might provide some variety that isn't there now. Also, he mentions how no one from Las Vegas has anything positive to say about clubs. Guess what? The clubs arent built expecting to cater to locals, they are built to attract tourists. I think more often than not most locals avoid the Strip period when they can help it, so its not a club specific thing. Not familiar with the writer of the article, but he seems pretty disconnected from what he is writing about.

I think the only thing that he's really got right is that Marquee, Tao, and the other smaller clubs are still on the decline. If a shift from EDM is coming, Vegas is in major trouble. With so much revenue being provided by the clubs, at this point I don't see how Vegas could make up the money with pop/hip-hop music and celebrities. Marquee having Wyclef Jean scheduled isn't exactly a smoking gun in any way, shape, or form, especially considering that Haze, one of the last bastions of pop/hip-hop, closed providing an opportunity for Marquee to try to gain the people who would have went there.

Tao Group is fine. People have been saying Tao was going to die for the last five years and they continue to rake in cash. Plus, he says Life's line up has some semi-famous DJ's and then lists two of the smallest names on their line up. The nightclub writers for Vegas clubs always come off as the least knowledgeable about clubs in general and DJs specifically.

Vegas locals tend to be the most critical of Las Vegas.

Really who cares about the DJ. We have all been to top DJ parties and it was okay and been to somebody who isn't necessarily top 10 or even 100 and had a frigging blast!! Nightlife is what you make it. I personally love love love production (reason #1 I wanna go to LIGHT when we go)... But don't get me wrong I care more about a good dj over a dumb celebrity sighting... UNLESS they make it rain like Busta Rhymes did back when Eve Nightclub was open lol
