  • Why do DJs matter?

Curious question here. On a Saturday night in Vegas at the EDM clubs, how many of the same songs are played during the headliner?
Ie- how many of he same songs are played at XS, Marquee, Hakkasan, Surrender?
I know each DJ has a song or 2 they are known for and they do a little something different to a particular song, but to a novice EDM fan, would you notice a difference?

The crowd would be different according to who's DJ. I mean, the crowd is gonna be completely different when Skrillex is spinning compare to when Prydz is. So it will affect your night in that sense.

The bigger the DJ the bigger the crowd

Yes, you'll notice a difference. The DJ's don't all play the same style. Armin Van Burren won't sound like Avicii. Skrillex and Calvin Harris are very different. There are big songs that DJs who play the same style might overlap, but honestly you're more likely to have DJs play sets with the same songs in a club that is Hip Hop/Open format.

Rookie question. If I saw Calvin Harris would he be playing his own songs or doing something else? I mean is it sort of a concert thing where he will play 2 year old tracks because they are his songs?

Although I agree with what has been said above to a certain extent, I feel for a lot of the shows in Las Vegas, DJs tend to play a lot more mainstream EDM. Last time I was in town, I saw Zeds Dead and Dash Berlin. I expected Zeds dead to be mostly dubstep, but they actually played quite a bit of house music and some of their hits. When I saw Dash Berlin at Marquee, he actually opened with "Pressure" by Alesso. I was really confused. I also has a similar experience with Gareth Emery (he played a lot of house, too)

With that said, I did see RL Grime last time I was in Vegas, and he did have a show with almost 100% trap music. When I saw Above and Beyond at MDC last LDW, they had an entire set of trance music. I guess it really depends on the DJ. I'd love to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar. I gotta say it was a little disappointing to see Dash Berlin play mostly house music at Marquee, when I was looking forward to a night of trance.
