  • Handshake tradition

In my country we don't do handshakes its actually seen as a form of corruption. Having said that we have booked 4 different events with 3 hosts.
Wed surrender $750 min (indirect host)
    Thur Drais B2G1 (direct host)
Fri marquee $1500 min (direct host)
Sat day drais $1500 min (direct host, same as thursday)

    3 questions...

    1. Am I supposed to give handshake to direct hosts?
    2. What's a decent amount for the minimums we locked?
    3. Do you give the money like nothings going on or should you kind of hide "the transaction"?

I don't wanna be cheap but also it's been very easy just a couple of lines through email so I'm a bit confused.

    Thanks for your help.

The term "handshake" refers to the fact that it's tacky to publicly wave the money around, and the money is discreetly passed. There's nothing to hide other than it's nobody's business how much you pay unless YOU wish to tell them.
I'd say generally anything without preset, pre-disclosed prices are considered shady in most countries at this point. America is one of the few well-off countries to rely on gratuity and tips instead of fees or service charges for a variety of interactions. If I were to hire a party planner or interior designer I would hope they would have an upfront hourly or per job cost quoted, and not just working on the assumption that people will tip them appropriately. The handshake is sort of this quasi-expected yet not necessarily required forms of tipping that aren't very common in many parts of the world or in general American society really in this day and age.

You will want to discuss how much you are tipping your host (the handshake) with your host upfront. Whether that is now via text/email or at the very least when you first meet your host at the club, before they walk you in. The goal of the tip is twofold....#1 is many professions in the USA we tip for good service. The #2 is that the handshake the host will give your priority on tabke location or bottle deals. So if you wait to tip your host when he seats you, and he's not expecting it, it's already too late (barring a few exceptions) to get a better table for the money you are spending.
So...if you haven't already talked table location with your hosts, maybe just shoot them a text asking about what area you might be in, and let them know you're willing to tip $X. If not, at the very least when you first meet your host let them know you are planning on tang care of them.

The "handshake" is simply a form of tipping. Tipping or to T.I.P. (To Insure Promptness) used to actually be done BEFORE eating/drinking/whatever, rather than after. It was done to make sure you were taken care of. It later changed to AFTER because that way you made sure you got the "services" upfront. Don't think of it as corrupt, it's simply a discrete TIP.

As for how much, I do what MikeK32 does and discuss it upfront especially if you're getting a deal and want to make sure of a certain location.

            Cheers!

Actually, it only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

A good friend would bail you out of jail, but your best friend would be the one sitting next to you saying, "damn that was awesome".

I live for the nights I can't remember with the people I'll never forget.

Thanks guys I'll talk to the hosts letting them know I'll tip them and the amount will depend on the location because our mins are not high and we're not hitting the top clubs because it was out of our budget. I'm thinking around 100-125 per event would be as far as I'd go.

I went with 20% but from what I've gathered by asking around $200 is usually enough.
