I guess I'm trying to get at, how can you pretty much guarantee you're not going to pay thousands of dollars for bottle service and somehow get screwed on an average or below average location for your table? Won't there be a sort of a pre-determined spot for most groups, making the tip a moot point?

Host tip was additional $400. Runner and Security tips were around $150 total. If Avicii is spinning the night you're looking at then I'd say the $2500 - 3000 min is accurate...otherwise you might be able to get a little lower bottle / table min.
Main factor into table location is your minimum spend. The more you commit to spending, the better your table location will be ('good' table location is definitely relative, but in the eyes of the club the best tables are the ones right on the dance floor). The tip can be useful to get your table bumped up to the next teir of tables. For instance, a $2k min spend plus a good host tip could get you sat with the people spending $3k. A good tip will also make your host happy, which has it's perks as well.

The best way to know approx where you'll be sitting is communication with your host. Be in touch the day of your reservation to confirm your location and ask them to let you know if anything changes. Arriving early helps as well.

A host can probably detail the exact process, but from my experience you are never guaranteed a spot until you actually get into the club and are introduced to your server at the table. Because it's a business and the club is trying to make as much $$$ as they can on any given night everything is fluid. In general they have an idea that x table will have a min of y on it, but things happen. Especially if you are getting any type of deal (B2G1, etc)...those are the first tables that will be impacted.

For instance...a few weeks ago when I was in town I had a table lined up in the main room at Tao on a Thursday night. When we got there they said the mins for the main room had basically doubled because the Miami Heat were supposed to be in town. The Heat never showed up, but (understandably) the club wanted to make sure they had space reserved for them if they did.

The more you commit to spend (and build relationships with hosts) should increase the level of certainty that you'll get your desired spot.

Funny side story: the guy behind Hakkasan reportedly got his table location request denied at a T1 club and that is why he is building his own club. Even the ballers get shut out sometimes!
