  • Basic questions about tipping for table service.

When is the appropriate time for one to tip the host and what is the rule of thumb for calculating that tip? For example, should I hand a cash tip to the host as soon as I am seated or can I include his tip in the tip on my table bill? And in terms of calculating the amount of tip, is there a rule of thumb that includes my server, my host, and anyone else that I'm missing (such as security)?

I oppologize in advance if this topic has been covered plenty of times in the past on this board...searching the board from my iPhone has been challenging!

It's up to you and what you wanna do, but a good rule of thumb is between 50 and 100 per bottle depending on my relationship with the host and what they do. I tip the host when I'm seated.

Thanks Jhaulotte. So If I have a $2k min and bottles are about $500, then am I hearing that you'd tip your host $200-$400 when you sit then tip another 20% or so of your drink tab to your waitress at the end of the night?

Waitress is already taken care of with the 20% auto gratuity...up to you if you want to tack on another 20%...depends on her level of service.

Just take note because the waitress tip should be included automatically on your final bill.

waitress tip is included on your bill. You can tip more, but its not really expected.

Cash tip your host, security and runner.

I tell the host when I book the table how much I will tip if Im tipping for location, then tip before we are sat. Totally up to you though.

What happens if your point of contact for booking the reservation isn't the one that seats you? That happended to me one time. I just ended up tipping the random host that sat my group, but it would've been nice to tip the person I was dealing with originally.

All the tips are pooled. It does suck not to meet your contact, but he will get his share!

sorry to go over this again as im pretty sure it has already been covered in other post's but does the 20% tip get added on to the total bill (inc tax) or just your bottle spend?

Runner/busperson Usually tip low-end 20, high-end 40. Security roughly 50 low-end, high-end 100. This is just what I usually do, you do whatever you feel is right and if the service you receive is worth it.

I usually only get 1 or 2 bottles when were at a club so its easier for me to tip 100/bottle. 2000 min I would think 300 is a very good tip, but to each their own I guess. AND just a heads up, if 400 and up isnt something you feel good with dont worry because you will not receive shitty service from your host.

That's happened to me twice, but mainly because I have a friend book my tables. Recently, he wasn't able to meet me to walk me in, so I tipped the venue host I was told to meet up with. Yeah, the host didn't really do much, but he basically dropped what he was doing and took care of me immediately when we connected in the line. Because it was a venue host, I felt that passing a fifty to him would go a long way towards a future visit, which will definitely happen after how well Surrender took care of me.

in reality, if u have a £2k min for a main room table that is NOT a dance floor at a club like Surrender/Marquee etc how much should you tip a host working directly for the club as standard? and how much extra should you have to tip to get a better table? i.e. as close to dance floor as poss
