  • 1 Week in Vegas - What to do, Tipping, Etiquette, etc

Hi everybody, I have been reading this forum a lot over the past week and must say a big thanks to everyone who has contributed to the forums, there is so much invaluable info here and everybody is so helpful.

I am going to Vegas on Sunday with a couple of friends (all male) and am just after some general advice on a few things. I have used the forums for some research and to contact some of the hosts who have also been very helpful so our plan for the week is finally coming together but I have some questions and am hoping somebody can help

When a host quotes you a minimum I understand that there is then tax and gratuity to pay, which equates to 28.1% extra so a $600 minimum would become $768.60. On top of this what else should we expect to pay in tips or ‘handshake’ to the host? So far we have booked in two pool parties – Bare (Monday) and Encore Beach Club (Thursday night) which have a minimum of $550 and $650 respectively. One of the hosts has said we can ask for him so from reading the forums I assume this will be to come and get us and walk us in and where any ‘handshake’ will take place? Is this usually a percentage of the minimum, a set amount depending on the venue, or just a case of however generous you are feeling? What would feel like an insult and what would be acceptable? Obviously we would have to tip the waitress so the amount of the minimum just keeps going up but I need to get an idea of by how much so I can let the other guys know what to expect

Also, out of the two pool parties we are attending would you say booking a day bed is essential? With there only being males in our group I believe we could struggle to get into places and at the very least have to wait a long time in line with general admin tickets, especially in night clubs but would this be the same for pool parties? I imagine Thursday night at Encore it would be more necessary to book a daybed than Bare on Monday?

Another thing I wanted to know, whilst we want to hit a club or two in the evening our budget isn’t going to allow for the expense of table service every night so what bars would people recommend where you can go and have a few drinks and socialise, maybe a bit of music and a dancefloor, without the hassle of huge lines and having to pay hundreds of dollars just to get a seat? Basically just somewhere you can go in and buy drinks. Do people have any recommendations? I’ve only ever been to Vegas once before, in September, with my girlfriend and we were only there for 4 days so only drank on one of the nights. We ended up in Kahunaville which was ok but was quiet, but this would be the type of bar I mean if only a bit more lively. As there is only 3 of us when you start looking of minimums of at least $1,000 every night plus tax, tips, etc it becomes very expensive

What recommendations do people have for things to do in the day? We don't want to be at pool parties every day and are looking for some other things to do, I think we may do some shooting one of the days and will probably lounge around the pool recovering a few days but does anyone have any 'must-do's'? When I went with my girlfriend we did stuff like Secret Garden, Shark Reef, etc but not sure as a group of lads we'll be bothered about stuff like that

Finally, Avicii is playing at XS on Friday 2nd May and I have been quoted a 1 bottle minimum which comes to around $800 including tax and gratuity then $300 tip so straight away that would be $366 each and one bottle isn’t going to go far on a Friday night. The alternatives I can see are to buy general admin tickets and wait in line and hope we have no trouble getting in or to get on a guestlist, do hosts take tips for just getting you in as a general admin customer and if so how much roughly would we be looking at just for somebody to get us in quicker? Or, what other clubs would you recommend on a Friday?

Thanks in advance for any help offered, I know there are a lot of questions there so appreciate any answers

The host tip is additional to the 28%. Usually $200 - $300, except saturdays at XS when its $500.

With your XS night, yes, 1 bottle aint gonna last long, also with that minimum you will be outside and not inside where you wanna be. Be realistic with yourself. Its gonna be two bottles at the very least, probably more if you have girls who WILL drink your booze. So go in with a two bottle minimum. Yes its expensive buddy but its Las Vegas and XS is a tier 1 nightclub. You pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Look at it like this - these trips are once in a lifetime. You dont get anywhere by scrimping. If you come home having spend £500 - £1000 more than you wanted, that isnt the best, but trust me when youre there its worth it.

With the nights you arent getting tables you can get pre-sale tickets from the club websites that are the same cost as GA, but there is little to no queue. You are priority above GA tickets so dont think if you dont have tables you cant go clubs, you just need pre-sale tickets to get out of that General Admission line.

Hi tomm0, thanks for the reply. Would you say the host tips would be the same for pool parties as they would for night clubs? Or less? Or should I just ask the host what they are expecting?

I get what you're saying about money and once in a life time but I have other people to take into account and the trip is already expensive with flights, hotel, tickets to the fight

        Sure it is bucks...

With pool parties are you planning to get a cabana or daybed? The host tip (or handshake) only applies when you're booking a table/cabana.

Text your host and ask what table youre getting. The higher the host tip the better table/cabana you get. Better location.

Say something like "With a $1k min can I get a dancefloor table for x handshake" - you get my drift.

Also, the host tip can reduce your minimum. You could ask for a $500 minimum with a $400 host tip for example... Basically your host gets you in to where you wanna be. The better that tip is the more likely you get what you want.

Just a day bed for both

Ok thanks. Going back to XS on the Friday, I can get pre-sale tickets online for $59.50 including booking fee. Would you say we'll be ok with these?

For sure, pre-sale is absolutely 100% solid.

For what its worth, its much better to have tables at clubs than it is daybeds/cabanas at pool parties. So if you're short on money bare that in mind.

I used to think daybeds/cabanas was the only way to go. Its not. Now I always go pre-sale to Pool Parties and only spend big bucks on nightclub tables. You quite simply dont need a daybed/cabana at a pool party. Its great, sure, but bare in mind most days in Vegas youve been crazy the night before, so going through litres of vodka at pool parties just doesnt happen.

Hmmm, good point and something I hadn't really thought of although the first one on the Monday will be our first full day, so we will definitely be drinking lots. The second is Encore Beach Club but on Thursday night, rather than in the day so kind of like a club anyway?

Ok, I think we'll just go for tickets to XS on Friday then

Do you have any other advice on my other questions such as other things to do in the day or bars?

tomm0 I couldn't agree more, save your money during the day you'll have just as much fun without a cabana, use it for tables at night

So we should ditch the day bed for Bare do you think?

Also, are we expected to pay a handshake to the host for a daybed at Encore on a Thurs night?

The host tip (or handshake) only applies when you're booking a table/cabana.
This would suggest not but just want to check, or should I check with the host?

                      Hey djpc247,

I totally understand your predicament with organizing a trip on behalf of all your friends; i was in the same boat last year. Presale tickets don't have the same "appeal" as daybeds, table service, and bottles but with my experience it does get you line bypass and into the club within a reasonable amount of time. if you're a group of 10 guys maybe go in groups of 2/3 to make it easier to get in.

                      Good luck boss and enjoy

With handshakes the host wont say he or she's expecting it - its discretionary.

So dont ask, they wont answer.

What have you arranged at EBC? Do you know what you're getting? Its usually a bargaining position to be honest. If you're going in with £650 (if i recall correctly) then text the host a day before and ask if they can set you up with a better location for a $200 handshake, or $300 or whatever.

then you give it to them on arrival when you meet.

FYI Monday at Bare - dont expect anything crazy mate. Its a Monday pool party so its nothing on the Saturday/Sunday deal. I wouldnt think it'll be busy at all really. I wouldnt bother with a cabana/daybed there its not worth it.

Hi SC0ttawa, ye it is a bit of a ballache to be honest just trying to explain why things cost so much. I go to Ibiza most years so I get it and am aware of expensive nights and the reasons why but it's hard trying to make people comfortable with shelling out so much. I guess after the first night they will get a better understanding

Oh, and thanks by the way. We will!!

Prepare to never want to go to Ibiza again my man.

Vegas is so so so much better.

$650 is correct yes, basically the host just said "You will have to spend a minimum of $650 towards Bottle service and Beverages before taxes and gratuity (There will not be food on the evening event - Only during the day)"

Ok, will do that thanks. So basically the handshake is for a good location and to look after the host who in turn will look after you?
