  • Geting Comp

I have been to Vegas five years in a row and gamble quit big playing blackjack. I play many hours with nothing smaller than a $100 bet going as high as $2000 a hand. I have seen very little comps over the years and I am wondering how people get things comped? I am going to be staying at Cosmo this March. Do they have a player's card or something that I should give to the pit boss when I start playing? I have to admit that in the past I am very bad at remembering my player's card and rarely give it to the pit boss, this is most likely why I have seen little comps. Any suggestions? What have you had comped?

    Comps

I just read in another thread that Cosmo is cutting back the benefits for each tier of their player's club. I personally have used M-Life and I know there is mixed reviews on it, but it has been pretty good for me. I do not play at your limits and I have received comped rooms and meals. Which I think is pretty good and this is at the gold level of their club.

That's a great point. I do play a lot of slots and I know that got me serious points very quickly.

If thats your play, you should have a casino host. Call the hotel and ask for one.

This article entitled "Identity Cuts Back Comps" might interest you lol. http://www.vegaschatter.com/story/20...uts+Back+Comps
"Identity" is the name of the players club at Cosmo. I think typically in most players club cards your points accrued expire after a year. So, if you only go once a year it will be hard to reap the benefits. Regarding blackjack specifically and getting comps, the formula is this: [Number of hands per hour] x [your average bet] x [the house advantage *varies by game*] = your theoretical loss per hour. Back in the day I think they comped around 40% of that theoretical loss total but since the recent downturn they are closer to 25% of that. So say your average bet is $200, the usual estimated hands per hour is 60 and you are playing a standard six-deck, standard vegas strip rules game which has a house edge of .6% when perfect basic strategy is used. That comes out to a $72 an hour theoretical loss. Multiply that by the going rate of 25% and you are netting a grand total of $18 an hour! Of course that's win or lose. Oh and yeah you're right... if you don't give your card to the nice man in the suit you are getting comped about as much as the transvestite prostitute walking the strip lol.

This is pretty much spot on. But also, the COSMO is never going to be able to get many big players to come, and with the success of their entertainment and food venues they are switching their focus on the late 20's/early 30's crowd.

At the mid-tier level ($200-$600 / hand) you are probably best off at any of the MGM properties.

So does that mean they are shooting for an older or younger crowd? Never been there.

Dnix is spot on, as usual. You definitely need a host. My spend is considerably less than yours, so I just use a players club card, but with Harrahs I've gotten entire weeks comped @ the Rio for roughly $1500 worth of slot machine spend. That's not including churn. You should at the very least be getting free rooms with your spend I would think, depending on the property of course. Hosts can tell you up front what sort of spend you need for the comps you want. Call them up and ask them!

My last trip i played a ton of blackjack at Palazzo...I didn't bother to get a Grazie card thinking I wasn't going to play enough to make it worthwhile. One night alone I sat at the same table chatting with the pit boss - he told me based on my play and time at table that I would have gotten comped at least 1 night off my bill and/or tons of food credits just based on the play that he saw.

You gotta get the players card or a host though...no visibility = no comps

You need to have a players card to track your play. Most if not all host will want you to get one anyways so they can see your hours played vs average bet. If you don't use a card you will become the non-reated player at first base. You will need to play a minimum of about 4 hours a day and $25 a hand to get comps for that trip. I'm not referring to promotions and mailers you may receive after you leave. The time vs average bet quotient basically determines how much they can comp you depending on what games you are playing.

As stated already, games with the least amount of house advantage comp the least. Games like black jack, baccarat, and craps. If you are looking for the most points you have to play slots. Having said that NEVER play for comps. Let them come in the normal course of play although your relationship with a host may become strained if you are not playing up to a certain expected level. To the OP, if your bank roll for gambling is in the 5 digits you may want to open a marker (casino credit). You travel with less cash and as long as you play at a consistent level you will typically get better treatment.

The key is to get a casino host and play in the 100 and up room. Aria has been good to me and my friends. Palazzo was generous as well. You can call up another casino and tell them your situation and they will usually give you a casino rate to get a look at your play. I have always gone by rule you need to play 4 hours a day at a hundred a hand to get free room and dinner each day.

Goes without saying but your comps will also vary by property. Playing 100 at the Wynn is not the same as playing a 100 at Harrahs. Some ppl expect the world and dont realize in comparison to other guests (not whales) you are not really spending that much money. Remember if using a host whatever they comp you is not free. You are expected to play at a certain level. If you take a huge loss one trip which is not ordinary of your normal play and a host comps you a bunch of stuff the next time around. They are expecting you to play up to that level. Obviously like any relationship there is some leeway but for the most part it should be fairly consistent.
