The cast: Matt (single, birthday boy and future doctor, looks exactly like Jason Statham, acts like he’s 21), Oscar (married, complete clown and online marketer), Rob (“open” relationship (?), ex-Army officer, heavy partier, never gambles), Zach (relationshp, F&B professional, sports management student, poker machine), Dave (single, new guy to the group, loves to party), and me (relationship, but pretty much going All-Pro at partying).
The setup: Matt’s birthday is the 4th of July and we usually do a big party at his lake place. Unfortunately, this year, he had medical board exams on July 5 and 7. So to celebrate the birthday and completing the big tests, we started talking Vegas the weekend after. As the plans were made and the crew was assembled, people started getting excited. I took the lead on planning and booking everything, as I usually do, and we put together a 55 hour tour of Vegas.
July 8: I have been sick for the past 3 days and have been going nuclear with DayQuil, NyQuil, and Pedialyte. My eating and workout final push was ruined, but I was going to make this trip dead or alive. We woke up at 5:45 AM and I dosed up one last time on DayQuil with a little extra sip for good measure. Zach and Dave came over to my house at 6:15 and we picked up Matt at 6:30 and headed for SEA. Got dropped off by the (very trusting) girlfriend, flew through security, jumped on the plane and took off by 8:00. We met some girls on the plane that were headed down for a 21st birthday, but otherwise the flight was uneventful - almost a calm before the storm. By the time we got to baggage claim, the one checked bag was already there, so we went out to the cab line. Our cabby, Abel, was a complete lunatic, I think he was ticking 90 MPH in the Dodge Charger dipping through traffic, and we were loving it! After a quick stop at Bank of America for some cash, we got dropped off at the Venetian to check-in.
Check-in was sweet. Zach is interning with a guy who’s brother works the front desk at the Venetian, so we got put on the 33rd floor with a strip and pool view and the end of the hallway, room 33233, baby!! He also gave us early check-in, about 16 Grand Luxe Breakfast Buffet vouchers, and best of all, 4 PM check-out on Sunday! We headed to the Grand Luxe for some pre-party food and the first drinks, grabbed our Grazie cards, threw a quick $50 on red (lost), and headed to the room.
After dropping our bags in the room , the 4 of us changed into swimtrunks, put some sunscreen on and headed to Tao Beach (I think we walked in around 2:00 PM). We had a couch and table with Chris Traer and we got it started with a pitcher of Frozen Redbull (thanks for the heads up, royale, they were amazing)! Jilla had texted me an hour earlier to let me know they were there and had loungers near the entrance. It took about 1 minute to finder her and her 2 girls and I introduced myself and said hi. We partied in the pool and shared a couple drinks and the party was a very fun scene. After 4 pitchers and a few beers, we are starting to feel pretty nice!
Oscar was driving in with his wife from San Diego and Rob was flying from SLC and they both got to the Venetian at about 5:00 PM, so we went and met up with them at the room and then headed out to the casino. Tanya (Oscar’s wife) was staying at the Venetian with one of our other buddy’s girlfriends, but we never saw them the entire weekend, haha. We all like to gamble a bit, but we don’t drop big money - it’s more for fun and free drinks. However, we have a longtime running joke that all we do is “G UP” (when really we are winning like a couple hundred). On Friday though, I threw down $100 at blackjack, bled down to my last $15 and then G’d UP!!! I walked away from the table good and drunk with about $1200 stuffed in my pocket! It was about to be a good trip!
After a quick rest in the room, it was time to cycle through the shower and get dressed for Tryst. Even though it’s walking distance, we grabbed a Suburban for a ride so we’d still be Fresh to Death when we arrived. We had a table booked at Tryst through Ryan Perrings and we were early enough that there was barely a line yet. Got right in and got a decent table next to the waterfall. I actually liked the location because it was busy, but not crowded. Met our waitress, Kristina (such a cutie and so nice) and got it started with 2 bottles of Belvedere. Took down a bunch of vodka pineapples and partied hard until about 3:00 AM or so. Hit up some gambling and stumbled around the casino until about 6:00 and made it into bed. We had one soldier (Rob) MIA, but he’s a survivor, so we weren’t worried. The next morning I had 25 missed calls and these texts from 8:15-8:21 AM:
“someone tell me our fuckin room number”
“fuck this weak hallway shit”
“cool, I’ll just chill in the hallway until someone wakes up”
He was sleeping standing up leaning against the door three down from ours.....
