Hey guys, i've been reading about this $20 trick. Can someone lay it out for me? I've gathered so far that its a tip at check in to get a room upgrade.. any more specific info would be nice.

Im probs hitting vegas with a mater in sept, is it something u try with just two ppl or better for groups?

Anyways, when you check in, just casually chat them up, slip a $20 between your credit card and id, or inside your passport. Make sure it's obvious enough that they can see it. Then ask them to see if there's a complimentary upgrade available. Easy as that.

Forgot to add. If they can give you the upgrade, they'll take the money, but if they can't, they'll most likely give the money back, or tell you right away that they can't accept it.

being polite and looking the part works just as well much of the time.

the corporations seem much more uncomfortable with the desk clerks taking money from their pockets than they are with service industry staff doing so.

It depends on the occupancy of the hotel, or if they have oversold regular rooms. It also depends on the agent and each hotel has different rules on this.

It usually works for me in the off season - like around Thanksgiving and Christmas - when occupancy is low. I've gotten two bedroom suites for regular room prices.

Always worth a shot....My experience recently:

Flamingo- July 4th weekend--no dice, hotel booked up and had to pay for the upgrade to a GO room.

Caesars Palace- Easter---With $20.00 sandwich I went from a comped room in the Forumn Tower to a Palace Tower room with 2 baths.

Others JCers are correct; be polite, friendly, and confidently ask if any upgrades are available. (as you hand the clerk your 'sandwich')

I've heard about this trick after I went in July, definitely gonna be trying it next time I go. If you google "20 dollar vegas tip" youll come up with quite a bit of small databases with people hit/miss stories...some are quite outdated though.
