Here's my experience. I always book the HRH with the SUPER cheap twitter rates, so every time I assume they're going to laugh me out of the building when I try the sandwich trick. "Yeah, we'll upgrade you from the janitor's closet to the maid's closet..."
But...
I had a casino tower room booked last Sept. $20 sandwich got me into a Paradise tower room. She said "do you want a nicer room, or a better view?" We went with nicer room. Our "view" was the parking structure. Like 6" from the parking structure. No biggie, because we weren't there to look out the window, but it made the room SUPER dark all the time. Kind of depressing, and god only knows if people in the structure can see in your windows if you leave the curtains open...
However, just this May my friend and I had 2 separate rooms booked. Casino tower. We were looking for rooms next to each other and/or an upgrade. Figured if we both went to the same desk clerk and both had $20 sandwiches, we'd get hooked up fat. Well, he handed our $20's back said "were all booked up this weekend". He ended up giving us 11th floor remodeled rooms one door away from each other (still casino tower, but not bad considering we paid $20/night).
Now, last may (2010), I was given an upper floor, pool view, casino tower room with no attempt at a sandwich whatsoever at check in.
Guess the moral of the story is it's a total crap shoot. When the sandwich "worked", we got a dungeon of a room with extra closet space... When it didn't, we got top floor remodeled rooms in the location we requested.
To tell you the truth, the remodeled casino tower rooms seem just as nice as the standard paradise tower rooms. The bathroom and the closets in the paradise tower room were bigger... That's pretty much it. I'd be PISSED if I actually paid the extra $$ for the paradise tower and got stuck in that dungeon room.
