Local Phone Plans

Coming in from Canada, our phone carriers really bend us over and have their way with us when we're roaming in the states.

I was planning on getting a local sim-card and pay as you go plan or even a new pay as you go phone with simple texting, as probably won't need a blackberry/smartphone.

Any recommended phones / plans / carriers?

You can grab a prepaid phone from any grocery store in the states pretty much (7-Eleven, Target, etc). I recall using a tracfone purchased at Target or Walgreens a while ago when I was on a lengthy trip through the states and had no issues. Also, Fido and Rogers (not sure about other Canadian carriers) do offer onetime text and voice romaing packages for the US which can bring costs down quite a bit and the use of BBM is still pretty much free.

If you have a SIM card phone. I think you can activate a T-Mobile line with no contract.
