Ideas on a good afternoon bar to start the weekend at

Can some of the vets point a Vegas newb to some good spots either on the strip or downtown to get a beer with a buddy while we wait for the rest of our party to get into Vegas. A friend and I get into town for a bachelor party mid afternoon on a Friday (2/18) and the rest of our group comes in much later that night. We figure we'll catch up over some drinks and maybe grab a bite. Staying at Mandalay Bay but we'd like to hit the strip and take in some sights. Not looking for anything pricey or trendy, we'll get to that once the groom arrives. Any suggestions are much appreciated.

Since you're already at the Mandaley, you might conside The Mix Lounge atop The Hotel @ Mandalay. I think it opens at 5. Very nice, but maybe a bit spendy. Also The Foundation Room atop Mandalay Bay is another idea, though I've only heard of it... haven't been.

Mikey's Stratosphere idea's a great one too. Had a great time there!

Burger Bar between Mandalay and Luxor (closer to Mandalay). Great beer selection and good burgers.

Holsteins at Cosmopolitan - - similar to Burger Bar, but with better "talent" and people-watching, IMHO.

if you wanna be outdoors, carnival court is a great spot, though i dont think they have food. if you want real chill, outside on the strip, margaritaville has an outdoor area with good beers and decent food and its right on the strip.

What's the appropriate attire for happy hour at the Stratosphere? I'll be in town in June and one of my buddies is...uh...not a particularly sharp dresser. Actually he has not freaking clue how to dress himself.

I have some time to work on helping him understand that Vegas is not the bar down the street.

Don't know if everyone does this or not but I thought it was pretty cool
