Coming May1-5 staying at TI was wondering if anyone has ever tried the handshake for an upgrade at this place, or if anyone has ever gotten an upgrade and how they went about it.

I stayed there last month and made small talk with the older female clerk. Mentioned I was there for my brother's birthday and she gave me an upper floor strip view room (had booked the basic one) and a free bottle of champagne (it was Cook's, but still something). It wasn't a huge upgrade, but she was nice so I still tipped her a $20 after. Wish she would have mentioned those resort fees though...

We ate at the coffe shop for breakfast our first trip 2 years ago, then ate at the buffet the next day, and the buffet was same food for about half the price.

not by my experience. the breakfasts at the restaurant were between $10 and $15, while the buffet was at least $18 per person.
