How early should you contact hosts for the guestlist?

How early should you contact a host in order to ask to be put on the guestlist? Day of? Day before?

Depends. On off nights the day of has never been a problem for me. On a busier nights the day before is probably ok but I think a semi-early time the day of will still do.
