I've had solid success using the Tao/Lavo wristbands twice this year (July 22nd and LDW) and it really is as easy as finding a door host, showing the email confirmation, and getting your wristbands.

Getting there by 11pm is probably reccomended, but I guess it all depends on the night. In July, got there around 11 with a group, got the wristbands, had a snafu where a buddy and myself had to change some clothes (newbie move of non-collared shirts and sneakers LOL) and even though there was a longer line when we returned at midnight, still got in no problem.

I've got suckered into getting bottle service of goose once when it was just me and my girlfriend at Tao (the others in our party bailed). Bad idea. The dude ends up drinking like 70-80% of the bottle because you feel like you have to get your money's worth for just dropping $600. It's not a pretty ending...
