LAS VEGAS -- The Clark County Coroner’s Office on Monday released the identity of an Oregon man who died from injuries he suffered at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino pool.

Matthew Williams, 27, was pronounced dead at Sunrise Hospital Sunday night. The cause of death has not yet been released.

Paramedics were called to the resort just before 6 p.m. after someone reported an injury at the pool.

A witness told FOX5 Williams drowned, but authorities haven’t confirmed what happened.

That's terrible news. Has this happened before at any of the Vegas pools or is this a first?

                ...

The cause of death has not yet been released.
Can't watch the video at work, but it doesn't sound like he died of drowning.

                Edit: Also, that's really sad.

this is a first... been in vegas 15 years.. and a complete first.. friends there said he dove in head first.. where he did.. the water/sand area was only 2 - 3 feet deep.. so.. it was a mistake.. terribly sorry to hear.. and my prayers go to him and his family

honestly, its amazing that it hasn't happened sooner than this. Its awful for the family and all those involved. Hopefully hard rock doesn't get too much negativity out of this, but I bet a lot of people will degrade the pool 'club scene' because of this. Its really something that could happen at a lot of pools, too bad it will be hung over Rehab.

A few of my very good friends know him very well (I do not). I'd up dated my FB status that I'd be at the EBC while I'm down there, and they told me to be careful, then posted the story.... This is so sad, and I feel for his family and his/my friends.

It does seem kinda odd/lucky that this hasn't happened before.

Here's to no more of this happening anytime soon!

Actually, it only takes one drink to get me loaded. Trouble is, I can't remember if it's the thirteenth or fourteenth.

A good friend would bail you out of jail, but your best friend would be the one sitting next to you saying, "damn that was awesome".

I live for the nights I can't remember with the people I'll never forget.

As someone who nearly bled to death just under a year ago in a similar accident, I'd ask you give this man and his family some limited sympathy. Last December I was at a resort in Cancun and dove headfirst into a 4-foot-deep pool because I was too lazy to walk 100 or so feet to the stairs. I was lucky, I did not end up dead or paralyzed (which all three of my treating physicians agree is a miracle), but I suffered a massive head injury that cost me 1/3 of my blood, 40+ stiches, and left a 9-inch scar somewhere under my hair. So right off the bat I feel a connection with this guy and his family. For me, as I'm sure he'd admit if he lived, it was a stupid thing to do. But it wasn't done with the intent to be stupid and it doesn't make you a stupid person. When I dove I was attempting to merely "belly flop" into the pool. I figured I could flop in right where my friends are and be none the worse for wear rather than walk all the way to the stairs, climb in, and swim/walk all the way back. Unfortunately I miscalculated and smacked my head right on the bottom. I'm sure if he were here today, he'd say the same. But whatever happened, he has a family that loved him and misses him, as I have a family that loves me and was very concerned about me. That's the problem with today's society sometimes- everyone does something stupid now and then that puts them in potential peril, like texting while driving, drag racing, or diving into a shallow pool. We ALL do it. But those who get away with their discretion sit there and make fun of those who don't as if they'd never done something similar themselves. A man died of unfortunate circumstances, please show a little sympathy.
