Won't be in Vegas for Halloween but I did just start making my DeadMau5 costume today. There are plenty of YouTube videos available showing the easy and cheap to the insane and expensive techniques. I stopped at three stores to get what I needed so far- PetSmart for a 13" hamster ball to form the head, Michaels and JoAnn Fabrics for red velvet fabric (pretty elastic to stretch and have a tight, seamless fit), eyes, ears, mesh for the mouth. Thinking of possibly making the eyes out of the push button-type lights. Just need to find a dremel tool and a hot glue gun to start cutting out the mouth and the rest should be relatively easy after that. Probably need to modify a hard hat to help fit the the costume head on me properly.

I've seen those videos. They seem moderately expensive and somewhat time consuming. It's doable though. Tell me though, don't you think it would be hard to pack? I'm still mulling the idea and the packing thing gets me. Also, can you keep us updated on your total cost and time into the project? And are you going to have any sort of LED in the mouth section? Thanks for the input.

Just spent 25 bucks on my supplies this is what I have
1. 14" diameter kids beach/bounce ball to use as a mold for the head (dollar store)
2. 2 pieces of craft plywood 1/8" think 12"x12" square (use for the ears)
3. A double pack of "amerelle moonlites" to use for the eyes (bed bath and beyond)
4. 2 packs of 36x36 red felt fabric (for head and ears)
5. 1 black cotton bandana (for the mouth)

The next item/idea is what I came up with and I think will work well......
6. 8"x 5 yards of plaster gauze wrap. Used for making the head. It's "plaster infused cloth for modeling & mask making"

You tube "how to make a plaster belly cast" to get a better idea of what I'm thinking.

Using the adjustable webbing of a harsher inside the head is brilliant and already have a hard hat. I will deff incorporate this into the design.

What I'm thinking is using the precast over the bounce ball to make the head, several layers so it is strong and sturdy. After drying is complete, pop the ball and pull it out at the head opening on bottom.

Next sand to a smooth finish then seal.
Drill several small vent holes on top of the head for obvious raved out dance ventilation.

Stencil in the eye and mouth openings and cut
With scissors (simple method) or cut off wheel if you wanna get custom.

Somehow the ears will have to be able to be removed and attached fairly easy and yet be reliable enough so they don't fall off . I have some thoughts on that. Makes for easy shipping as well.......

(1) 13" mega hamster ball cage @ $24.99 less $3.75 with 15% off coupon @ PetSmart
1 yard of red velvet fabric to cover ears and head @ $4.19/yd
1/2 yard of white mesh fabric for mouth @ $1.29/yd

So, roughly $50 deep after you factor in Michigan's 6% sales tax.

Nervous about styrofoam ears being too fragile. I have tools galore in my garage so I went with wood.

Possible strategic bling rhinestone placement or battery powered blinky Xmas lights around eyes and or mouth......
