  • Who's following this BP oil spill?

Not to sound overly doom and gloom but seriously, this might be the end.

      I can't stop reading updates.

I don't think most people realize how massive this thing is.

        The end of...?

...A viable path of energy independence from foreign oil imports [though that notion's a bit overblown by the media as oil drilled goes onto the open market and bid at the going rates... unless, of course, oil & gas companies were nationalized. But that wouldn't be fitting for a capitalistic nation]? Probably not... Ixtoc was a huge spill and drilling continued afterward. Valdez was a disaster, yet oil shipping continues to this day. Oil is a lifeblood commodity and will continued to be drilled, regardless.

...Of plenty of jobs in the Gulf? Certainly, for the time being - all those on the oil rigs will probably have to move away from the region to maybe the rigs off the West to find work. Hopefully that doesn't happen and the administration lifts the moratorium on offshore drilling as it's an important driver of the economies of those states.

...Of the cap & trade debate? I hope not - I know the Dems are trying to tie the spill and the huge tax bill, but it would be an irresponsible assertion (but "irresponsible" has never really stopped politics, right?)

...The end of the Obama honeymoon in the media's eyes? Most definitely - even MSNBC's been highly critical of the President's feckless leadership when it comes to this catastrophe. This is a huge political mess for Obama - if he & the DNC are smart, they'd contain this spill to his administration and protect the rest of the Dems running for Congress in this important mid-year election. However, all Obama's been doing has been shifting blame and refusing the notion of the "buck stops here".
