Whats the deal with tables?

Sorry Im English and am not too sure about the US's club etiquette.

In England we pay at the entrance, buy a drink and find a place to sit if we want and don't have to pay anything extra.

In the US if we want a table do we have to pay for Table service? Or if we see a table can we sit without paying anything extra?

to sit at a table you must purchase bottles of booze or meet a certain minimum tab

M8 im from Cheshire and I know plenty of clubs and bars which do table and bottle service only!
