I'm pretty sure Canal Street should be the next restaurant featured on Gordon Ramsey's 'Kitchen Nightmares.' While the staff were extremely friendly and the service was overall good, the food at Canal Street was absolutely terrible. Like, the kind of terrible that makes you try and guilt yourself into eating it because of all the starving kids in China. From the appetizers, to the steaks, even to the after dinner coffee - nothing even made it to the point of being mediocre. It isn't even like I'm that picky of an eater, but I was afraid I was going to get lock jaw from having to chew my steak for so long and the Prime Rib was just fatty and tasteless. I was even trying to find something to like about the place. They had a scalloped potato side on the menu that I had high hopes for. I mean, how can you mess up potatoes? It even looked like it would be good when they brought it out. Nope, my eyes betrayed me. On to dessert......yea, that sucked too. Jesus Christ. Have you ever accidentally eaten a week old raspberry? I think I have now.
The only thing that made this meal worse was that the helpful waitress adamantly insisted on boxing all the (mostly uneaten) food up, and now all of this crap is sitting in my fridge. I actually drove around looking for homeless people to donate it to. No luck.
It is true that the entree prices are a little cheaper than other steakhouses in Las Vegas, but we also have hundreds of great steakhouses to choose from and most all of them serve better food than Canal Street. If you get stuck going here with someone, play it safe with a salad and some hard liquor. Otherwise, you would be much better off just going to the casino cafe next door and ordering the $9.95 steak and eggs; which actually tastes pretty good comparatively.
