  • Cruising across USA (Route 66?)

    All,

Its quite uncanny how I get the best advice from a LV forum about the rest of the states however thats the way it is so here goes.

I will be landing in LA on the 1st March approx. I want to fly straight to Miami or somewhere similar for spring break, However id love to drive route 66 from LA to chicago or visa versa.

Has anyone done this? if so how was it?

Can someone tell me how feasible it is to fly into LA onto Miami and hang there for spring break. Around April 1 I will fly into Chicago and buy a car and cruise route 66 into Vegas for AOD.

That gives me a month and a half to see as much as I can from Chicago to LV.

Does anyone on the forums live in chicago and can help me find a car, register it etc?

That sounds awesome. I'm planning some sort of road trip after college with some friends. Are you American? How hard is it to buy a car if you don't have an address in the US?

flying into LA and then onto Miami is very feasible and should be easy they are both major hubs. the only thing you might want to reconsider is the route 66 thing, as far as I know its now mostly stop lights and shit it might take you a month, i know in cali its like that. you would be better driving along the freeways and making stops at the cities on the way.

Ah so route 66 isnt a major freeway. I dont really care about the road I can just cruise state to state then.

I am not american and I can probably buy a car using my friends mums address as my home address.

I am just concerned how many hours it is state to state. In australia from sydney to melbourne or brisbane is about 11 hours. If the us is less than its do able and ill stop in each state.

Am i right in saying a straight drive across a state is about 4 hours from one side to the other excluding texas which could be about 8?

well food for thought is NYC to LA takes approx takes about a week driving about 16 hours a day. from chicago to LV would take about 3 days or so. thats without accounting for time spent roaming

hmm so it seems each state on average would be around 8 hours driving kind of.

Im not sure if im up for such a huge task although it would be fun if i did it slowly.

I would have to buy a car which is going to cost me plus rego and insurance its gonna be expensive.

Yup.. the PCH can take you from Socal to Norcal.. but it will take 10+ hours if you are speeding. Taking the 5 (boring route) will get you there within 6 hours.

Im not sure about your routes, but I can tell you from experience, Id spend 3months in the west and 3months in the east. Id also by a small motorhome, but Im an outdoors person, and camping in yellowstone, ect., is better than a hotel. Its easier for traveling too, because you can pull in a rest stop, or walmart parking lot to rest.
