Has anyone been? Worth spending better part of half a day to see it?

oh i didnt know if you were into photography or whatever. umm, yeah I think it might be intersting to hike if you are very outdoorsy. However desert landscape is pretty blah. There are cool things like small animals and bugs, shrubs etc. It not really something I would say go and do. I think going to the grand canyon or something would be better.

Because of the time your going it might be just perfect... but like Elle said, I'm from Cali so it's all whatever. I'm gonna have to drive thru desert for my next trip so that'll be enough desert for me!

Half a day? No.. its more like a road stop. Theres a good subway sandwich there and a taco place. I usually spend no more then 15 mins filling up gas there. I wouldn't waste your trip from Canada in Death Valley. Go straight to LA or OC.

I always just stop here Experience the Gateway to Death Valley and then Hightail it

I always stop at the MAD GREEK for a Yeeerroooo! and a milkshake. It may be all the billboards stating they have the best but they are pretty good and its a nice break from the long drive. Its also the entrance to death valley if your like me you will experience that the entrance is pretty damn hot and you will do what I do. Hightail it to Sin friggin City. If you wanna get away and experience the "Nature" I would suggest heading north on 95 and heading up to Mt Charleston. Its cooler it smells like pine trees and they have a great place to rent bikes and experience the outdoors. Have fun.

Greek food generally in the south west is horrible... like, really really bad.

Another great spot to check out is Red Rock Canyon. Its about 15 miles from the strip, and you can experience a similar desert landscape. Red Rock is where the titanic plates shifted exposing years of rock formations. Worth the 2 hours max it will take round trip.

There's a lot of things you can do/see in the Mojave/Death Valley area. It's a national preserve, so you can go look at the Kelso Dunes, check out the Kelso Depot, watch the Jack rabbits run around, and even go hiking and mountain climbing on the granite boulders.

But I wouldn't recommend doing all of this after the first week of may, the heat just kills you. I was out there one weekend for my bio class during the 2nd week of may, and it was a killer!

On the other hand, I camped out there during April of 2007 for 3 days (in snow the first night) and did all the things I mentioned above and it was quite fun!

P.S: Mad Greek = bad greek food. I just never liked it.
