  • Tipping in Vegas

    Hey,

So my friend & I are leaving for the States in 8 long weeks.

First stop is Vegas.. anyway we're from Australia so tipping here isn't customary and you really only do it at restuarants..

Can anyone advise us on tipping customs for Vegas? Thanks!

Services such as Valet, shoe shine, Cab, bartender, and cocktail waitress are usually $1-3. you can give a bit more depending on what they have done for you but thats about the range.

Restaurants are 15-20% of the bill without the tax. Most of the tax where I go in CA or NV are roughly in the 8-9% range so I usually just double the tax and then some if I feel like they deserve more.

When it comes down to club promoters/hosts that can vary since there is no certain percentage on what to tip. They say 20% to your waitress and $20-30 to your busboy at the club. Hosts can vary depending on what table they are giving you and how much you are spending on the table. I guess thats at your discretion but there is an expected amount.

There is a thread dedicated entirely to this topic in the Nightlife section. Set aside about an hour and read through it. It's got everything you could possibly ever want to know.

        Chuck,

I've tried searching for the topic you mentioned with no luck. Any chance you could post a link to it? I've read people mentioning tipping your host, waitress, runners and by the sounds of it anyone else that walks past your table so I could really do with a heads up on the art of tipping.

        Cheers

There's a bit of a tipping guide that Jack wrote that covers all the basics.

Its on the home page of jackcolton.com. (ie not in the forum section). Can't miss it, just scroll down to 'how much to tip'.

Here's my personal take on the topic:

Servers: 20%, up to 30% if service is amazing
Bartenders/Cocktail Waitress in Casino: $5 for first drink, $2/drink after that
Security: $20/guy at beginning of night, additional $20 if service is amazing
Runner: $20 at beginning of night, additional $20 if service is amazing (up to $60 for the night)
              Host: Walkin/line-pass = Cover+$30; Bottles = 30% of minimum, $500 max
Cab: $5 if they don't jerk me around
              Limo: $40
              Cab line attendant: $2
              Bellman: $5/bag
              Concierge: $10
Housekeeping: $5/day (My room is always tidy, go more if you're a slob)

I generally budget at least $50/day for tips not including servers for meals or nightclub related tips.

Last but not least...ALWAYS look at your bill and check to see if they added a tip automatically. Even when they do, there is still a line for you to write in a tip. Generally, if a tip is added automatically it will be 20% which is sufficient unless you really feel compelled to tip more because they blew you away.

Thanks for the info, really appreciate it.

Being from the UK tipping is not something you have to deal with much other than when dining out and then over here in Dubai everything is pretty much at your own discretion. I'd like to think I can now walk away from every situation without anyone thinking I'm cheap!! Maybe??!
