I think the idea with a wingwoman is to make prospective women feel more relaxed while they get to know you. Unlike men, a woman would generally rather talk to a guy who is with a woman than a guy alone or group of guys (a guy with another girl is a better "catch" than a guy with no girl). To SyneyGirl's point, a wingwoman shouldn't be trying to introduce you to new women (that would be too obvious as she says), but wingwoman should be with you to make the women you approach (or that approach you) feel more at ease, and perhaps also to give the impression that you have one or more attractive women (the wingwoman) to choose from. Note too that many women are more comfortable approaching a man if he is with other women than if the man is alone, especially if he looks like he is having a fun time.
