I'm pretty adamant about not playing wallet mechanic. I fix my cars myself and I like to do it. But man, I'm getting old, and to get the time to do it I usually have to take a day off work. So I had a fight with my wife's car replacing suspension components yesterday. Took all morning. Got done and started on another job, lengthy one which involves removing the intake manifold. I got 5 bolts out, stopped, and thought to myself "I should just take this in". It's my wife's car, if the job doesn't get done then the car is down and it's a hassle with the kids and getting to work, etc, until it's good to go. So I buttoned it back up.

I hated pussing out like that. I'm sure I'll do it myself another day. But man I just don't have the time or the energy anymore; I'm sore today cause I spent an hour or more laying on the garage floor cutting seized bolts off the damn car. And that job's not done either, I have more parts to order and replace.

So that's my weak moment, someone share theirs and make me feel better!

haha it's funny, I was a mechanic for about 4 years, had tons of cash invested in tools and everything.... now I work in an office and usually pay someone to do shit on my car. i am more than capable of doing almost anything but first off I don't have the tools anymore since I got rid of them and second off its a lot easier to just pay someone since I also dont have room to work on my car.

it's really kicking my ass though so i can't let it go. i'm chasing a clunking in the front of the car and i just can't track it down. every suspension piece looks ok to me. ball joints are questionable but there's only 60K on the car. last night i got this funny feeling that i should check out the motor mounts. shoot, sorry, there goes the technical jargon again

you should of taken it to the dealer. they would have told what was wrong with it for free, and then you could have decided if you wanted to mess with it.

no way dude, no dealerships for me. i spent a few years working in dealerships including in service. i'd have had to charge a guy an hour's diagnosis time to verify the condition.

i can fix it. i think i'm stumped because i've been looking in the wrong place.

What kind of clunk is it? Does it happen when you turn? When you hit speed bumps? When you accelerate? Try holding the brake and accelerating in drive and reverse, if it's a motor/tranny mount you'll definately hear it by doing that.

It's a long road of a diagnosis and explanation. The short version is that I think there are a couple of things going on, one of which I solved with the end links. But I did the brake/accelerate trick last night and the motor is definitely moving more than I think it should. Just have to crawl under the car and verify that.
