Sunday day (thoughts on aria and liquid)

So I figure I should give some take or details on our stay at Aria. I have stayed at MGM and mandalay twice and palms once in the past. When I booked the room at aria I used the offer code listed on one of the jack colton threads whereby I got a $50 resort credit for each day I stayed. I was in town for a conference prior to our drunk fest so we had a $250 credit. Although I used the credit I used it more out of luck. Unlike some credits I have taken advantage at other places this credit was literally for each day meaning that you had to use the $50 each day. Without really planning on it we ate strictly at Aria and charged all of the meals to the room this worked out, just be aware of this if you are using this deal or others at aria. They also don't list the credit on your bill they deduct it from the total charge, this ends up being confusing and because we technically ate dinner on Sunday morning, if not for a call to the front desk I would have lost out of the final $50 credit. All in all this deal was very solid.

This is by far the nicest hotel I have stayed at in vegas. It is pretty upscale without being stuffy or stuck up. (Note I have kids) there were no kids here at all, on my trips to the mandalay there were lots of kids, not to be a jerk, I love my kids but I don't need kids in vegas. The rooms were really nice and had nice amenities like remote control drapes. One weird benefit was the elevators, we were on the 53rd floor and we never (honestly) waited for an elevator. It is really amazing, I think it is because the elevator banks only serve a few floors but it was great especially compared to the other vegas hotels I have stayed at because sometimes those waits were terrible. The location of this hotel was fantastic, it really saved me on cab costs, I would say that I saved at least $100 over the duration of the trip.

My only complaint is that they have no quick and dirty options for food although we discovered that the Monte Carlo is connected to the aria, we only figured this out on the last day, and they have a good food court there. I would stay here again in a heartbeat, the only hotel that I would rate higher was the palms back in its heyday when it had all three clubs open and ditch Friday was nuts.

When I set this trip up the main reason why I chose the Aria was because you could guarantee a late checkout (3:00) for $30. Every time it have come to vegas I have always had a worry in my head about the flight home because in the back I my head was always the knowledge that I had to get up and get to the airport so this time I booked an afternoon flight home, at the time my wife intended to go shopping for a few hours while I hit the tables; obviously that did not happen.

We wake up Sunday morning at 10:00, we're not hungover at all but we may have still been a little drunk because we did go pretty hard to close things up Saturday. First thing my wife says when she wakes up is can we head to liquid? I am game so we get ready and head to grab some quick food. We discover downstairs that there is a McDonald's in the Monte Carlo so we walk over there.

One problem with this whole plan is that we have a flight at 4:30 so we need to leave the aria before 2:30 and we have not packed at all. Add to this my wife will want to shower and missing our flight is not an option and I impose a 1:00 get outta liquid time.

We head to liquid, you have to walk through the aria pool area to get to it. We get into liquid around 11:15, we get in for free as an aria guest, they said this is the case at least until 1:00 every day.

Whereas I think I have been able to formulate an opinion of everywhere else we visited I can't do this with liquid because we were only there from 11:15 to 1:15 so we really didn't get to see the place get going. I do have some thoughts on the place though...

When we walk in there are maybe a dozen people here, because we will not be here long I am immediately in a two minute offense, the bartenders and waitresses here were not very good, for starters I want a drink and no one seems to care, secondly I go ask a waitress some questions on where it is ok to put shoes and she ignores me, I ask again and she says "I am for daybeds an cabana's, do you have one of those", I walk away thinking this is going to suck. I go up to the bar fake cough a couple of times and one of the bartenders come over, my wife is on the fence about drinking so she just gets a water I get one of those large sovenier cups of patron mixed with something.

            A couple thing about liquid:

            1) the place is very small, I think this kindof works for the place.

            2) the sound system sounded better hear than any place we had went to, day club or night club. I have a feeling this is due to size and the walls they have surrounding it.

            3) there is NOT a better place to go if you have valuables that you simply have to have with you. They have a bag check that is right next to the pool, they give you a wristband so it is really convenient so if you hand them your phone you can go get it and give it back throughout the day.

            4) they have these brown mats that line the walkway to the restrooms that are as hot as lava, because they do not let you keep your Sandels by the pool, you have to check them, you have no choice but to brave the lava mat barefoot if you do not have a cabana or daybed, this kindof sucks.

Back to the story, because no one who works here seems like they want to be here I am beginning to think about bailing. The lifeguard for some reason comes over to talk to me (earlier he had to have seen the deal with the waitress). He tells me about the bag check, we put our stuff there and get into the pool.

I decide to hit the restroom before I get into the pool. When I walk in there is puke everywhere, like someone exploded. I come out and realize that I am now in a predicament, it is 11:30 and there are maybe 7 male customers (way more women early, there is a reason for this later) at the pool so I am concerned that if I tell someone about the puke I will get blamed for it under the "he who smelt it dealt it" paradigm plus I am clearly the only guy drinking a big drink at this point. I error on the side of doing what is right, it was clear the head security guy was bs'ing with the dj, I walk up an tell him he goes running to fix this saying nothing to me.

So now I see everyone that works for liquid head back to the restrooms, I tell my wife the situation and she laughs and tells me if I get tossed she is staying and to meet her at the room, funny. a few minutes later the head security guy comes over to us, high fives me and says thanks he then asks my wife why she is not drinking because it is free champagne for ladies until 1:00, he goes over grabs her one; ok so now it is on.

So it is around 12:30, I am on my fourth big drink and my wife has just been pounding the glasses of champagne so while the following was hilarious to us it may be a waste of time writing about it, but I will. The daybeds are filling up. But the people occupying then do not seem to be into the party at all. We are acting like lunatics. The dj plays a set of songs surrounding a rapper named Mr. Moët, without going into detail (google him if interested) Mr. Moët Has a very particular set of skills that make him of particular interest to females. His songs explain why he is called Mr. Moët and what his specific skills and preferences are, by far some of the most graphic lyrics I have ever heard, we are dying laughing like little kids but no one else seemed to notice, just blind stares, everyone just acting cool (so I am probably 2 years too late on mr Moët but who cares it was funny).

We finish up and end up leaving a little after 1:00. We are both at least very buzzed or at worst wasted. Getting the bags packed in this state is a disaster but all goes well eventually and we depart vegas and catch our flight!

My closing take on liquid is this. The daybeds here would be a waste, you can easily leave your stuff at the bag check and they make you do this because they do not allow you to put shoes anywhere on the pool deck so the need for "space" is somewhat moot plus everything is so compact "traffic" would be everywhere if this place was crowded. The cabanas look very good they have a seperate pool.

I would go to Liquid again, I am somewhat curious how crazy this place gets because it was so subdued when we were here. It did seem like a great option if staying aria and the crowd did look a little older than mdc which is a plus for me because this could extend my "vegas dayclub career".

              Epilogue: Some final thoughts

So why did I write this long trip report?

For one thing I wanted to do this to put some info out there that would hopefully help someone else. I have been to Vegas 6 times, this was by far the best trip I have had. I think the reason why this trip was so good was the planning that went into the trip. Several times while in vegas whomever I was with and I would talk all day about our plans for that night but not really have anything formally worked out, time and time again this lead to one lost night on every other trip. This did not happen this time and I owe the thanks for that to this site and the people who post to the site, I hope my experiences help someone else.

The other reason I wanted to post this was to sort of serve as a time capsule for a year or two from now when we are planning to get away and debating where to go (to vegas or not to vegas). I guess I wanted this out there to remind my wife and I about our crazy time. It is pretty fun doing an after action report on a drunken trip like this, it really is pretty amusing walking back through the details.

This trip did go off perfectly, every other time I have been to vegas I have always regretted some aspect of the trip afterward. The regrets usually were attributed to some part of the plan not going off. Pre-sale was an awesome difference this trip, it really did seem to eliminate the major buzz kill that long lines can be.

So would I try to do the drunken gauntlet of 3 night clubs and 3 day clubs on back to back to back days again?

I don't know, one thing about doing this is that you miss out on the great restaurants and other options that Vegas offers. The reality for this trip was that we really needed to check out of responsible life for a while. We have 3 kids and do very little without them, we can go to dinner when at home but going completely nuts is not really an option.

One option that dawned on me during this trip insofar as planning future trips was the notion of committing to only day clubs and not doing nightclubs at all. Doing this would allow us to go crazy, grab a legit dinner and then pass out.

One problem I think that we had on this trip and every other trip to vegas is that of nourishment. Although I was sure to make sure that we were getting meals I know we ate very little. It is very hard to make yourself eat when drinking the amount we were. Hence my day club only idea.

Reality is that if we make it back to vegas before we are too old we will probably go hard again, like a tour of the Wynn clubs over a few days stay or something, it is probably inevitable.

Many previous trips of ours were with other people, this time we did it by ourselves. Every time we have had other people along for the ride inevitably someone complained the entire time about money or a couple fought the entire time, this always brought us down. One of the great things about us being by ourselves was that we were really unchained to do what we wanted when and how we wanted, I honestly do not think that I could have has this good of a time with anyone else other than my wife because most guys I know would not go this hard. One thing that sucked about us being on our own was cost, we spent a lot in the clubs, if we had one or two willing couple(s) we could have easily rocked a table any of these nights, with that said people we have went with in the past would have never kept up our pace drinking wise.

So with regard to my original questions; we were not to old, appearance did not matter, planning lead to no line issues and yes people in their late 30's can handle going hard for three days as long as they use some type of hangover cocktail (magnesium + coconut water)

I hope I have given some details that will help some of you without boring you with too many details. Till next time, I say good day!

I got the magnesium pills at GNC, like $8 for a bottle of 60. For those that have not drank it, coconut water is somewhat of an aquired taste, to me it initally tasted like sweat. You have to commit to drinking it cause I think this is the difference maker.

Coconut water taste like the leftover milk from raisin bran! But I've grown to like it. Works for me if I chug before passing out. How many magnesium pills do you take?

I took one magnesium prior to sleeping so one before post dayclub nap and one before really passing out.
