  • Has anyone ever tried coconut water? This is what I have read:

Hangovers are caused by dehydration, a process in which the total amount of water leaving the body is more than the total amount consumed. Alcohol is a diuretic which encourages just that, by temporarily obliterating the body’s production of the anti-diuretic hormone and causing excessive urination.

Your body’s battle against dehydration. The liver needs water to rid the body of the alcohol you’ve consumed. However, there is simply not enough water left after heavy alcohol consumption and the inevitable “breaking the seal.” Thus, the body has no choice but to “borrow” water from other organs: the brain included. This process is what produces those pounding headaches the next morning.

    Coconut water as the cure.
Dehydration depletes the potassium store in the body, causing thirst, muscle cramps, dizziness, and faintness. As you learned in a previous write-up, coconut water is extremely high in potassium (11 oz. of coco water contains more than in 15 bananas) abating the unappealing symptoms mentioned above. Drinking a glass of coconut water after a late night out will also replenish any other vitamins and minerals that were exhausted by a night of partying. To be safe, drink a glass the next morning as well.

I've been meaning to try this, but haven't had a chance. Anyone confer with this?

if you look up the nutrition facts, coconut water is pretty similar to pedialyte in sugar and sodium content so it will probably be similarly effective in terms of re-hydrating you. the potassium should help as well.

just make sure whatever brand of coconut water you buy doesn't have excess sugar/HFCS added.

        • I tried Emergen-C for the first time on New Year's. Lots of heavy drinking that night, but the Emergen-C came through. Had one packet before bed and another upon waking up. In addition, one of my friends had been coughing all night, so it managed to prevent both a hangover and a cold in my case.

          • I have to say the best cure I know of is Pedalyte. It is a electralyte drink to rehydrate kids, who are sick. It is gatorade on steriods. Drink one before bed and one when you wake up works like a charm

            • I have been wanting to try coconut water. Maybe I will put it to the test after drinking all day and night on st. patty's day... since I have to be to work the next afternoon.

But in veags... pounding water before I crash has always worked.

Also... I feel like I never get hungover in vegas... or if I have something fun to do the next day that involves drinking. Like tailgating... or something like that.

One glass full of buttermilk. That is enough for any degree of hangover..

Good first post Reinner, I can tell you're gonna be a solid contributor here. I'm going to try that buttermilk tomorrow.
