In regards to tipping at an open bar...
This is strategically speaking, establishing a great tip early with one specific bartender is a great way to receive quick service and upon repeat trips they will be more likely to serve you quicker and even throw in some additional shots, added syrups or etc for free. This is good strategy open bar or not of course.
The second tip would be double team the bar with someone, hoard the first round of drinks, go back to the bar, pound the drinks on the spot and order another round. Your alternating of pound vs hoard is a personal choice but I find stocking up while the drinks are free to be an excellent way to maintain a free buzz
