ASG, it really sounds like this part of the Vegas experience is not for you. I understand your perspective, but this simply is not the way it works in this town -- at least not at the hot clubs. I am not going to flame you; I know a lot of people who view this issue from your perspective. I tell them the same thing. There is plenty that Vegas has to offer that works they way you prefer (e.g - the fine dining).

As for the bars, I suggest you stick with the many great casino bars and places like Carnival Court. Maybe even check out Eye Candy and Mandalay Bay, but it really seems that MO at places like Pure, XS, etc is not suited for you.

Well said Breeze. The other perk I will mention is that if you ever happen to strike out getting into a particular restaurant on a particular night, a good VIP club host with whom you have an established relationship can probably get you in........

In Vegas money talks. If you want something you have to pay for it. You won't get a good table location just by coming up to a host and saying " Hi, How are you?". There are different minimums on table locations, there could be 1btl minimum table locations which can be far away from all the action in the club and there can be 5btl minimum locations that are on the dance floor. SO, if you want a good table location, you give the host a TIP because they are the ones who will be looking after you.

Doesn't sound like they're looking after me at all, sounds like they're looking after the club. Why am I not dealing with the club directly, again?

And no, I don't tip the maitre d at a restaurants either. And even if I did tip, $100/bottle? That's like 25-30%!

This is a business. You are competing with some very, very wealthy patrons. Now you don't have to be a millionaire to be given top flight service in Vegas, but these hosts (like any other person in the service industry) want to know that their time, efforts and opportunity costs of doing business with you are not going to be wasted.


They like dealing with people who tip well, but they also like dealing with polite and friendly people who don't treat them as a simple doorman.



I can tell you one thing, My hosts look after me.


When they comp me free shots, they are looking out for me

When they reserve and hold a kick azz table location for me (even though I could theoretically stiff them and waste their time and money) I know they are looking out for me.

When they comp me free Figi Water ($8 bucks a pop), they are looking out for me.

When they give me their VERY BEST waitress/ server, so my boyz have quality service, they are looking out for me


When they tell a security guard to "watch my effing back" and that guard watches my table like a doberman, they are looking out for me.

When they save me a 1 hour wait in line, they are looking out for me


When they relay special music requests for a birthday boy/ girl, and the DJ gives a special shout out to said person, they are most assuredly looking out for me

When they bottle up my spare booze in plastic containers so I can pre-game for free the next night, they are looking out for me.

When they comp the cover for ANY SINGLE girls I want to bring to my table, they are looking out for me like Batman on amphetamines.

but when they get me into a club the next night,AND COMP MY COVER, knowing that I have not booked a table there and am not planning on giving them a tip, then I know I am not just being looked after...

I know that they are TELLING me that they value my business, my time and that they WANT me to come back to their venues.

They are no longer earning a simple tip. They have WON a customer.


Vegas is a built on these kind of relationships.


If you want to go to a third rate club and throw pennies at people who bust their hump and don't expect anything in return, take your business to f%^&ing Laughlin or Reno.

They love cheapskates like you there.

What/where is Eye Candy?

Mandalay Bay.

It is right in the middle of the casino at Mandalay Bay but "sort of" tries to be a small club/Ultra Lounge. Has much more of an Ultra Lounge feel to it than the other casino bars, but is much smaller than other places. You can find out more info on the board and by Googling it. They do offer bottle service, etc, but tipping expectations are not the same as the bigger places.

Breeze has it spot on. You take care of people in Vegas, they will take care of you. Not just club hosts...but literally everybody from the odd cab driver to the hosts at the best clubs. It also helps to be a repeat visitor in Vegas...helps you build those select relationships and helps you build a reputation for yourself. You will be taken care of if you are known to give "solid" handshakes.
Also, just as important as the money is doing it with a smile and treating people with decency. Even if you have money, it doesn't help you if you are an azzhole...

I tip the cabbie (and everybody else I can think of) after service. Even as somebody who works in NYC , this whole process sounds insane.

Anywhere I've heard of, you tip the guy AFTER they go the extra mile. Anywhere I've heard of, you get major apologies and free stuff if the table you pre-reserved was moved, let alone if your reservation was dropped. Anywhere I've heard of, a 20% tip of your bill split amongst all parties involved is considered quite generous. Then again, anywhere I've heard of, you're not spending hundreds of bucks a night on booze that isn't a very nice bottle of wine with your meal.

Who has an idea of the base pay for a Vegas club host?

I have friends out there who say 15-20 bucks an hour depending on the club, seniority, and other factors. This seems a little high to me for people getting hit off with $100+ handshakes.

I'm not sure the base pay, but (like waitresses) they rely almost entirely on tips.
