If you charge your phone and run on Edge your battery life increases 10 fold. Turn on 3G only when you need it.

I'm on the Edge network even though I have a 3G. It just helps increase battery life and in some areas works better than 3G.

I've decided to try it actually after seeing your post. I'm on wifi alot so I don't need to be on 3g all the time. I'll see if I notice a usable difference and if it impacts my usage.That being said, if you're asking if it can be done, you're probably not at the level where you could pull it off.

This is why I use wifi. I think if you have the phone set to look for wifi networks it uses more battery but if you have it set for specific locations AND you're using the Internet alot, then you're better off using wifi. I've got to be able to get my jc on at work!
But I've already noticed a difference by having the 3g turned off. Also, I run my bluetooth devices almost the entire time my phone is on when I'm at work and the gym. So I'm killing this battery fast (it's my second iPhone too).
