Downtown, though, downtown is freaking awesome. You go downtown to drink cheap, gamble cheap, hop from place to place and get blitzkrieged out of your mind. My best recommendation is to go down around lunchtime and spend an afternoon/early evening there and then head back to the strip for night-time activities.
It's fun downtown at night too, but there's really not a huge bar scene. I do HIGHLY recommend the Griffin. It's a great lounge with a fun crowd. Beauty Bar pretty much right next door is hit or miss (more of a scenester/hipster crowd).
If you really want to experience something different "off strip" look into hanging at Dino's Lounge or the Artisan for part of a night. Downtown Cocktail room is a pretty good place for crazy mixed drinks and martinis. They do not play around there!
There is life outside of the clubs!
