As someone who has worked at a club door myself, it has always irked me when a group of guys don't want to pay the full cover charge especially when they show up late. It's your choice when you show up. The club is running a business and when a group of four guys shows up, the club will charge cover ($40 sounds reasonable for this past week.) I have always made it a policy to never negotiate with a group of guys about cover. Either pay it or move on. Or bring 2 girls for every guy if you want some negotiation leverage.
