QFTOriginally posted by ReleaseTheCrackin View PostYou answered your own question --- this is why unions are so important in a capitalist economic environment. Because our human condition is so fixated on greed, those at the top are naturally going to try to get as much productivity while paying as little as possible for help. We live in a sociopathic society, and without worker protection the system of capitalism seeks to exploit and take advantage. This is explains why inequality has exploded in this generation. Even if those at the top are experiencing record profits...they will always seek to either downsize or eliminate a position all together because they serving their investors. Investors hate money going to workers, regardless of profits.
Thats where unions come in. A good unions sole purpose to to fight for the interests and the benefits of workers. Why have corporate mouthpieces in the media worked so hard to demonize unions? Greed, pure and simple, and the greed at the top has become so insatiable. They dont want to stop the trend of the last 30 yrs where all of the wealth is being transfered to the top at the expense of the working middle class.
So my suggestion? Try to unionize las vegas security. Im sure security guards all across the strip share your frustration. You guys serve an important, and critical role for the club. You should be paid more --- and you deserve more. This will not be an easy fight, but if you are serious about improving the conditions for not just yourself, but all security guards --- then the sacrifice will be worth it.
Good luck, friend.
Norma Rae...they made us watch that back in High School, haha. Not a bad movie though.
As for your situation, I feel for you, though not in Vegas, I've done security and it is a shit job for the most part. The only perks ARE the hot women and turning away douche bags...buut if you aren't working the door then you aren't getting to do that anyway I guess.
Can you "pinch" the tips that you do get and make it worth it? haha

No....I reject this. Yes you are. You have recognized the fact that the compensation for your position in no way reflects the sacrifice you put in for the club. You are on the front lines --- and if some shit goes down, you and your team are going to be asked to handle it, and put your bodies and possibly your lives on the line, while all the executives hide behind you.Originally posted by Sortie View Post
While I do understand the value and importance of being a union worker, I'm not quite suited to start a union.
.
You are simply asking for a livable wage --- you're not asking for ownership of the club --- and thats what you deserve. Trust, I'd say that 95% of club security and bouncers think the same way.
So just ask around....ask other bouncers, at other clubs how they feel about their wages and benefits, and what are the possible steps you guys could collectively take to improve your standing. Thats how the union ball gets rolling. If there are enough interested parties, somebody will step in to organize and give the group legal focus. If you want some help, I'd be glad to assist in any way.
This is the deal --- owners and management arent just going to give you what you deserve, they're too greedy for that. You're going to have to force them. You have it in you --- you just have to believe in yourself.Last edited by ReleaseTheCrackin; 09-23-2011, 12:55 PM.

But this is Vegas, and it's rough out there.
I guess that's why I'm not interested in starting a union.

Few of my good friends does security for clubs here in my town. They also get paid not that much and deal with some sort of BS all night. Runners and security hard workers of this industry for sures. I always appreciate the security staff at the Vegas clubs, and take care of them much as I can. And I always had good experience with them, I was kind a disappointed about tips going to the ''senior guard'' instead of the guy take cares of your area.''In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life.'' - George Best

My suggestion to you is build a database of VIP customers and start booking tables. Once you become noticed in the booking world you can move over to hosting and make some money. Please remember the grass isnt always greener. Us hosts work 2 full time jobs. The day time work of collecting contacts and booking tables and the actual work at the club. So when you show up at the venue we have already been working for 6 to 10 hours on the strip (exception: once you reach a point, usually a year or so your phone will begin to ring and you wont have to grind it out as much)

You just haven't figured out how to make and keep tips. That's the missing piece of the puzzle. Security makes a LOT more money after they figure this out. If you're losing all your tips to a manager, then you need to figure out the politics in your organization to get the right piece of those funds. There's a bunch of money being generated by security in any popular club. Here's some basic advice. Always shake every employee's hand when you first see them that night. Learn everyone's names. Become friends with the managers. Find out where you're losing out and pursue those opportunities. Just like any underground economy, it applies to clubs too...

Man that is just wrong. The most work I make our guards do is kicking out grenades, and that is WORK I tell yaOriginally posted by Drew View PostSo all those tips I give to the security guy looking after my table... none of it he keeps???Originally posted by Sortie View PostFor the last few months I've worked at one of "the top 3 nightclubs in Vegas".

Getting anywhere in life really depends on being sociable, knowing the politics and who you know(goes back to being sociable: build connections with people).
Work on the above and everythign else will fall in place.

I do understand what your saying.
However, every regular guard at my job I've spoken with says the same thing.
.....and I've spoken with no fewer than 15 of us.
Nobody but the section host is making anything.
And there is almost no chance at becoming a section host till at least next summer.
...and there are at least a dozen people ahead of me.
I did go out on an interview today though...looks good so far.
